So, the full retail version of Windows 7 is here.  I know a lot of people have been running the release candidate for a while, but it'd be nice to hear from anybody who has actually made the jump without having previously experienced Windows 7.  I had previously installed Win 7 beta, but only used it for about a week and was running it in a VM so I didn't really get to try out all the features.

Personally, after a painless install and all of my devices being recognized and having drivers automatically downloaded for them, I was sold.  Having to reinstall all of my drivers manually in XP whenever I formatted was the biggest pain (especially my sound drivers, which always caused me problems because they never installed correctly the first time).  I used 7 today for about 3 hours before I decided to wipe XP and format my primary drive specifically for Windows 7.  It runs faster with my 2 gigs of RAM than the computers on campus run Vista with 4 gigs of RAM.  None of the visual effects have caused me any slowdown or problems like what I am used to seeing in Vista and the taskbar is great.  I particularly like the fact that my download progress in Steam is represented in the taskbar.  So far, after at least the first day, I'm pretty pleased.

I can only second everything Remington has said. I've been using W7 Ultimate x32 for about two weeks now (the company I work is in the MS partner program) and I'm not coming back to XP. I took a leap of faith and installed it instead of my old system, formatting the whole partition. I hated Vista, but 7 is a thing of beauty. Hell, after recognizing all of my drivers it even found any updates to them by itself - no more checking for new graph drivers. The Aero interface work flawlessly with my 2 gigs of RAM, 2.7GHz Athlon 64 x2 and a 128bit 1gig GeForce 8500. I love the new taskbar and even WoW seems to run better than it did on XP. It seems to use about 500mb of memory, with around 200 for all the services and programs I'm running atm (firefox, foobar and 2 IMs).
Also, I have yet to encounter a single hangup or bluescreen, and I don't think I was forced to hard-restart the machine even once since installing.

I haven't tested it on mobile systems yet, but I'd assume Win 7, like all the other systems, needs separate drivers for that specific keyboard. Have you tried installing all the Asus drivers for Win 7?

If none of these work, it might be an issue of them not releasing the keyboard drivers for Win 7 yet.

Thanks ShittyWok, although it didn't work; I'm still stuck.

What themes are everyone using? I'm currently using Windows Red, and it looks alright, although I want something a bit calmer and minimalistic.

These are the two desktops I'm using currently (both are clickable for full res versions):

But mostly I just have it set to shuffle my 100 or so widescreen wallpapers every hour.  I get most of my backgrounds from Interfacelift or Deviantart.

I was able to get my wifes fn keys to work on her vaio by following the steps it took to get them to work on vista.
That might help you, or it might not. You may have to wait. I don't know anything about your machine.

Keyboard would likely need new drivers if the Fn keys aren't working, as others have said. It's anyone's guess as to whether asus will put out drivers for that model of computer with windows 7, though. eee PCs aren't exactly high up on the 'likely to be upgraded to a new OS' ladder, since they're minimalist netbooks and not real laptops.

What the fuck is Ars talking about with the search feature?

http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/reviews/2009/10/windows-7-the-review.ars/6

They make it sound like they got rid of advanced search (ability to find files by date or size etc) and replaced it with some kind of bizarre command line thing where you have to memorize code that will allow you to search for something other than keywords (which won't help you on most files).

That can't be right, can it?

It is a lot simpler than they make it sound, and the ones that were in the dropdowns in XP are now at the bottom of the search bar

However, now it allows more advanced search terms

Quote
Date Modified: Search for files based on the date they were last modified.

Date Taken: Searches for photos by the date they were snapped.

Date Created: Searches according to when the file was created. You can select the date (or a range of dates) from a mini-calendar that appears.

You can also be less specific and choose: A Long Time Ago, Earlier This Year, Earlier This Month, Last Week, Earlier This Week, or Yesterday.

Size: Search for a specific file size by typing its KBs or MBs in the search text box. Or, you can search by various size ranges.

Kind: Search for files of a specific type as selected from the drop-down list that appears when you click the Kind option.

Type: Searches based on certain file types by extension, such as .pdf, .jpg, or .docx.

Name: Searches by filename. You can enter all or part of the filename in the search text box after the Name filter.

When you don't know all of a filename, you can use the asterisk (*) to stand for one or more wildcard characters in the filename and a question mark (?) to stand for individual wildcard characters.

Length: Search for an audio or video file by its relative length. You can enter the exact length or select one of the Length options that appear in the drop-down list.

Tags: This filter lets you search for a file by the tags assigned to it. Enter one or more tags after the Tags filter in the Search text box.

Authors: Search for file by a particular author. Enter an author name after the Authors filter in the Search text box or select the name from the drop-down list that appears. (This filter is called Artists when searching audio files.)

Is anyone else either a filthy slacker student like me, or a wishy-washy professor? If so you can buy Win7, either home or pro, 32 or 64bit for £30:
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/education/studentoffer/
That links to the UK deal, but there's one for the USA and probably other locations too. USA gets an even better deal as it's $30 there.

If your campus is part of the MSDNAA and you are in a qualifying program, you can get it for free.

Hey Sublex, what version of Windows 7 are you running? I can only get Professional through MSDNAA, but I think my 1008HA may be a little too weak for that.

I'm currently running Windows 7 on my 2 1/2 year-old Toshiba laptop, and it's running fine. Here's the weird thing though: I thought you had to do a clean install if you had XP installed. I thought this meant formatting and partitioning and all that stuff. However, all of my personal files as well as all programs I had installed  under XP are still there. Did I do something wrong? I'll probably format my HDD soon, I don't want Windows to slow down too soon.

Although I believe MSDNAA only gives you a single-use key. Win7 still has the "change your hardware enough and you need to reactivate" stuff, right? It seemed better to me to buy my own copy.

I'd been working on a 5-year old desktop and just recently got a new Windows 7 equipped laptop.  I completely skipped the whole Vista generation, so this is a fairly big leap for me...it's been pretty damn nice so far though.  Been using it for a week and already I'd never want to go back to XP.  I really like the new taskbar with the little window previews that pop-up.  All my ancient programs still work just fine in it too (my copy of Office 2000 has served me well).  So yeah, from the point of view of someone not usually on the cusp of new technology, thumbs up.

I got to play around with the RC for a bit, and we have in-depth click-throughs of Windows 7 at work, but I'm still kind of antsy about switching over from XP. I can finagle a free legal copy, maybe, so price is not really an issue, but all I have is the one hard drive with XP and Jaunty Jackalope on it and don't want to be too hasty about installing 7.

Visually, at least on the surface, it looks like a successful cross-breed of Vista and Ubuntu. Any hiccups so far? The way everyone's been describing it, it sounds like the greatest thing to ever happen to computers since streaming porn was invented. Of course, those opinions are from friends who loved Vista and customers who think Linksys and Linux are pronounced the same way, so I don't really trust them. Bakudai's post about the search function nearly sold me on it, though.

I'm really on the fence about this.  I've heard a lot of great things about Windows 7 but I've been running 64-bit Vista for a year now and honestly I've had very few problems with it.  All these new features sound good but I'm not sure if they're worth the price of upgrading.  All I want to know is if it'll make my Photoshop run faster!

Yeah, but you can always call Microsoft and explain what happened and they'll reset your key for you.  I did this with the copy of Server 2003 that I got from MSDNAA last year and had no problems.

Maybe it's different at my uni, or perhaps the FAQ is just poorly written, but we're told:
Quote
Q: Does the license (or "key") permanently unlock the software?
A: No - the key allows you to install the software once. If you need to re-install the software, you will need to contact the PA (Program Administrator) at your school. Your PA's contact email information can be found in the support page. To view this information, please click on the Support button above.

Kind of a pain if I could just talk to Microsoft instead and have it reset like a regular key, but oh well it was cheap anyway.

Schroeder: I've been using XP/XP64 since they came out and I've just upgraded to 7. So far I've got no complaints, besides the fact I don't know where anything is, but then the help menu is very good. There are lots of helpful little UI tweaks. It does nag you a bit, but it's easy to turn off.
