Roxanne Shante recorded the hit 1984 track "Roxxanne's Revenge" when she was 14, arguably becoming hip-hop's first female celebrity. She has also never recieved any payment for it. She then discovered a clause in her recording contract that said they would pay for her education for life, possibly a cynical throwaway line they assumed would never be utilized by a teenage mom in public housing.

Instead of winding up on "Where Are They Now?" or some reality show garbage, she now has an Ivy League PhD in Psychology.

Fuck yeah.

I think this is an amazing story and would say nothing negative against her and her success. What I noticed on first glance though...
Quote from: the article
"I'm an example that you can be a teenage mom, come from the projects, and be raised by a single parent, and you can still come out of it a doctor."
Because every teenage mom from the projects has a poorly thought out contract dating back 25 years, that locks a major media group into paying for every bit of the Ivy League Degree they seek.

Just for the sake of argument, how much do you think 25 years of royalties for a hit song would come out to? Shante's PhD cost Warner Brothers about $200,000. I'd be willing to bet they made at least 10 times that in the past 25 years on that song alone, and that's being conservative.

I, for one, am willing to forgive a silly platitude in order for an artist to express her fortunate experience.

The part that surprises me most is the fact that Cornell apparently doesn't fully fund its Ph.D. candidates. That's virtually unheard of. A Ph.D. isn't like a Bachelor's, it's more like a job.

Is that generally true in the US? Because in many EU countries the course and funding are entirely separate.

I think it depends on the field. In engineering/science fields, the students usually/often get paid for the research they do. In the humanities, not necessarily. If not, being a teaching assistant often pays the bills - but again, in the humanities it's a lot less guaranteed.

It was guaranteed at all the US universities I applied to, and I study history.

Yeah, but it's freakin' Cornell.

I just checked their grad school financial support page. Everyone there is guaranteed tuition and a stipend, through either assistantships or fellowships. So I don't know exactly what this woman's label is supposed to be paying for.

Well, two things.

1. An assistantship requires you to put in hours, it's basically like a job, right? She is a mother, she might just want to do her classwork without having to put in extra hours to pay for it. Which is completely understandable, because:

2. If the record company already said they'd pay for it, why the hell would you argue with that? Make the fuckers pay for it! Instead of taking money away from the school, or from a fellowship, make them honor their contract and let another needy student get some financial assistance. Isn't it possible that she was offered some form of financial assistance, and turned it down because she already had someone legally obligated to pay for her education?

Almost every form of financial assistance comes with strings, either loans, or required duties, or minimum grade point averages. If you didn't have to worry about all that bullshit, why would you?

Dude. This isn't college. No one in graduate school gives a shit about grade point average, and the Cornell program is fully funded. No loans.

As for the assistantship, good luck getting a job in academia with no teaching experience.

To sum up: I'm not saying that she shouldn't do this or that the label shouldn't have to pay. I'm just saying that it shouldn't really make much of a difference to her financially, whereas the original article implied that she would have been unable to go otherwise.

She didn't start asking for the money after graduating from an undergrad program, she was asking for it to start her undergrad education.  At 19 years old (1989):

Quote
Shante found an arm-twisting ally in Marguerita Grecco, the dean at Marymount Manhattan College. Shante showed her the contract, and the dean let her attend classes for free while pursuing the money.

She used the money for her entire higher education.  She graduated with the PhD in 2001, so the funding policy for even that program may have changed since then too.  Also, that's 12 years of higher education so there were probably some part-time years or some time off, which makes sense with her situation, but could screw her up in fitting conditions for public funding.

Edit: 12 years, I am bad at math.

OK, if she was using it to pay for undergrad that makes way more sense.

But Ph.D. funding hasn't really got any conditions, generally speaking. It's a job, not a grant.

PSYCHE!

Roxanne's Nonexistent Revenge
Heard about the rapper who forced her label to pay for her Cornell Ph.D.?
It never happened.

http://www.slate.com/id/2227090/

"The story was endlessly blogged and tweeted, heralded as an example of a heroic triumph by a girl from the projects over her evil record label. Credulous music-industry critics lapped it up; Techdirt, after stating flatly that Warner had "tr[ied] to cheat [Shanté] out of her contract," reflected the online sentiment: "It's nice to see how Warner Music actually did some good in the world, even if it had to be dragged there kicking and screaming."

One problem: Virtually everything about the Daily News' heartwarming "projects-to-Ph.D." story appears to be false."

I'm not sure what the Daily News' reputation is supposed to be, but you'd think they would at least check to see if she actually had a PhD.  That's not a frivolous detail, that's like the main point of the story.

Since this thing was a hoax, does that mean I can start telling people there's a vast conspiracy designed to keep single black mothers out of college again?
