Again, I am not denying that there is all sorts of racial/ethnic conflict in the north. I live in Philadelphia, which is probably one of the most segregated cities on the east coast.

Do we have unofficial segregation? Yes. Do we have racial violence? Yes. Are opportunities frequently withheld from minorities? Of course. Does any of this somehow excuse the south from being a national embarrassment, or from having been consistently behind the times for (at least) a hundred and forty some years? Of course not.

Actually, I think you make a good point. I mean, it's a tu quoquo kind of thing, but it's still a valid. Nobody from the north (or Australia) can criticize the south for institutionalized racism without hypocrisy.

That doesn't change the fact that holy shit racial segregation still exists, but it is what it is.

I've lived in the south most of my life and some of the biggest racists I've ever met are from New York and Massachusetts.  They don't burn crosses or anything. Most of them probably aren't even aware they are racist.  They just live in big houses in neighborhoods where they never have to associate with anyone who isn't rich and white.  They have the luxury of being judgmental of southerners because brown people are a fucking abstract concept to people like them. 

Let them come visit us here in Texas and their discomfort at the unavoidable proximity of Mexicans and Katrina-displaced black people is fucking tangible.
