Make A Topics Page, Get Featured Next to DOB on the Front Page of Cracked.com, Earn $50!

Topics Pages are changing based on your feedback! Two pieces of feedback specifically:

"I asked for a Gremlin's topics page three weeks ago and I still don't have one. That's three weeks I could have spent inserting subtle dick jokes into the Gremlins Wikipedia entry. What gives?"

"I like money."

In line with that feedback we present:

The Weekly Cracked.com Topics Page Contest!

This will be our second ever Weekly Cracked.com contest, and will function pretty much the same way as the Photoshop contest.

Each Thursday we will choose one topic to feature on the front page Friday morning right next to DOB's weekly column.  In addition to becoming internet famous, the Editor of the topics page will win $50 USD. And it will be easier than ever to create a page since we will now be giving you all requested Topics Pages four times a week.

How To Win:

1. Ask for a Topic in THIS THREAD: http://www.cracked.com/forums/topic/41452/cracked-topics-page-request-thread.

Monday - Thursday at 10AM PST / 1 PM EST users will be granted any pages they request. No more waiting around. Ask for a topics page, and you'll be able to work on it while the idea is still warm in your head.

Don't Have a Topic In Mind? Go to the UP FOR GRABS THREAD if you're already an Editor, or if not, we'll be posting periodic updates below about what's available.

Instead of getting a weekly prompt, like you do in the PS contest, we'll be updating this thread with a list of "Up for Grabs" topics. These won't be the only ones considered for the contest, just topics that we think could make good pages that are currently unowned. So if you're looking for inspiration, that's the place to go.

2. Update Your Page Within 14 Days and Let Us Know When You're Done

If you already have a page and are looking for deadline info, see the below post.

To be considered for the contest your page will need to have the following four things:

*An Image/Series of Images That Sum Up Your Topic

As you may have noticed, we've tended to feature topics pages on the front page that have some sort of funny image that gives a unique/humorous take on the topic (like this one on vampires). These don't need to be incredibly involved. If you just want to caption an image with a funny bit of dialogue, that's fine. If you want to do a complex flow chart, that's fine too. All we know is a nice summary image at the top makes people WAY more willing to read it, and we're making that the format now.

*Facts

These are all of your best observations about your subject in bullet point form. An easy way to convey your perspective quickly and efficiently.

*Summary

Again, doesn't need to be too involved, can be a paragraph or two. When writing your summary, and putting your page together in general, we want you to be thinking "definitive" instead of "comprehensive." We'll let Wikipedia be the place for dry summaries of every known fact on that topic. We want your pages to be the final word on your topic, not a compilation of everything you know about it.

*Links

Give us at least one link off to some page  that people might find interesting/funny. This can be a Cracked article on the subject, a YouTube video, anything that you want people to see.

Also, choose at least 3 "related topics". Even if there's not a topics page specifically related to your topic, pick a few of your favorites.  We'll get you a list.

As alluded to above, you'll have 14 days to have at least rough drafts up for those sections. If you don't have anything for one of those sections, your topic will go back in the Up for Grabs thread. We're putting a time limit in place because there are at least 30 pages that have been left blank for months. This isn't fair to people who actually have ideas for content on those subjects.
We've also noticed that in the writer's workshop, folks who execute an approved pitch within 2 weeks tend to end up with the best articles. You guys work best under deadline, so we're putting one in place.

This will apply to all pages that are currently up and blank. So if you requested a page and haven't gotten started on it, you have until Friday May 8th to fill out those four sections. Also, folks with completed pages will need to add at least a placeholder summary images if they haven't already done so.

Make sure to let us know in your Topics Page thread when you've updated your page. That's the only way we'll know to go check it out.

OK folks, we have our first three winners for the topics page contest.

This week's winner, which you can find on the front page of the site, is Nathan and Dave's Bond Page.

Last week's was Steve Clark's page on Chuck Norris.

And the winner of the first week's contest was DCD's page on Japan.

If you've already written something for Cracked just send along an invoice like you would for an article to jobrien@cracked.com.

If you haven't already been payed, send an email to Jack at that address and he'll get you the necessary forms to fill out.

Everything's looking great so far. The job of picking a winner has been extremely difficult these past few weeks. And keep in mind, you can win no matter when your page was initially published, so if you've updated your page, be sure to let us know in your page's thread in the Topic Page Editor's hangout.

Yeah we're still in beta and have yet to create the infrastructure to make these easy to find unfortunately. Here's a key for finding topics pages. Hopefully we'll be making this unnecessary fairly soon.

KEY FOR FINDING TOPICS PAGES
All topics page urls have the same basic format:

"http://www.cracked.com/topic/"  + "#" (see key below, the number represents the order in which they were created) + "-" + "topic-with-words-separated-by-dashes" (NOTE: words like "of" and "the" have been removed)

The thing that makes it tricky is the number between the base and the topic name. We're getting rid of that, but for the time being, here's a key of all the topics with their numbers. I've started you off with a few so you can pick up the pattern.

It's got all the elements of a successful topic page. A subject people find interesting, a ridiculous image to lead off, and funny information throughout.

No, yours doesn't have to be thousands of words long; next week we may pick one that's a fraction of that lenght, as long as the words and image that are ther pretty much say what needs to be said. Keep in mind one of our most popular topic pages is the one on David Caruso Jack threw together using a Photoshop contest image, an embedded video, and a few chosen words. Sometimes that's all you need.

Because the pages were down last Wednesday for maintenance, and since there was some confusion about the deadlines, we're going to give all Topics Page editors with May 8th deadlines until this Friday May 15th to complete their pages.

What the deadlines mean
To meet your deadline, your pages needs to have the following four things:
1. At least one summary image
2. At least 3 facts
3. At least one summary paragraph in the content section
4. At least one link to content that is related to your topic.

Once your page has those four things, it will be eligible for every weekly topics page contest until it wins.

If your page is still not complete after the deadline passes, you will no longer be the editor of that page and it will be put into the Up for Grabs thread. If someone else requests your topic, they will be made the editor.
