Because by definition a marriage is the union between a man and a woman. If they change the definition of this word, what other words will they change next? Communication will break down and everything becomes ambiguous. Look at the Tower of Babel. They couldn't communicate with each other and an entire nation of people was scattered.

Don't be selfish. Think of the greater good of society, if you intend to stay with the society you're familiar with.

Oh but society is beginning to fall apart. Here's an example of a simple almost common day phrase. "I love you." That is seen as a social taboo now. You hear about finding the right time to say it to someone or else they might be scared away or misinterpret. And why's that? Because of another word in the language which I'll get to in a moment. When we say love, we think of marriage, especially if it's a romantic love between unrelated individuals (unless you're into incest). And with marriage, traditionally one would also think of sex. And here comes the other naughty word. When we think of sex, we think of the f word. So when a person says "I love you" there's a hint of "F- you!" in there, and that's why people get turned off and scared away. So don't think for a second that language doesn't severely impact society.

Unless you plan to be a hermit. Then you have your own discourse community, in which case any word can mean anything to yourself.

I say "I love you" in a positive way to people all the time. But they run screaming to their mommies who then threaten lawsuit. What has the world come to?!

I speak of the destruction of language which leads to a same fate for society, and marriage is just one major contributing factor among many.
