Oh they're hippies alright. I've heard "The Herd" described as the Frenzal Rhomb of the Hip hop world.

But I also love Frenzal Rhomb.

Choosing between The Calling and The Hard Road for me is like choosing between chocolate and cheese. They're both so incredibly tasty, but for their own different reasons, and I can't choose which I like better.

Why am I the only one who voted for Blackstar? You people are savages.

By "you people," I mean whites.

I voted 36 Chambers, but I'm questioning that one already.  I do enjoy second guessing myself.

I also think that The Chronic has a place in any discussion of the greatest rap album ever made.  Also, whoever it was that said that College Dropout would be worthy if not for the skits, I agree.  Of course, that can be said about any Kanye album.  The man just can't get enough of the lame skits.

Also, one of my favorite albums that I don't recall seeing mentioned is Ill Communication by the Beastie Boys.  That and Paul's Boutique are pretty damn good (I prefer Ill Communication, personally, but I know that most people point to Paul's Boutique as their masterwork).

I second the It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back vote.

In fact, I'd argue it should be on the poll.  Or Fear Of A Black Planet.  SOMETHING by Public Enemy, in any case.

If you're talking Aussie hip-hop, look no further than Bliss n Eso's 'Flying Colours'. They give the Hilltop Hoods a run for their money.

At Midnight is the greatest song ever.

I just like how he shows up in a thread that is already three pages long, full of people who are obviously fans of rap music - BECAUSE THEY ARE POSTING UP THEIR FAVOURITE ALBUMS - and goes "hey guys, rap is shit, AM I RITE?" like everyone is going to fall over, sides splitting at the witty manner in which he put forward the undeniable argument that rap is a terrible genre and people who like it are mongoloids.

Nice one, Nixon. Way to pick your audience.

I thought for sure that there would already be a topic like this one but, after searching for a while I couldn't find one.  So to answer your question, yes, you can all take turns repeatedly kicking me in the ass if this is a duplicate.  Share you list, hip hop fans.

note:  this is not a "best of all time" list.  it is simply a list of your favorites.

Out of the ones in the poll, I say Illmatic. In reality, I'd either say It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back by Public Enemy or Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by Outkast.

If we're talking about our national rappers, Canada has some pretty decent rap.
Buck 65's album Talkin' Honky Blues is damn awesome, as is his latest, Situation
Cadence Weapon is great, especially his latest album, Afterparty Babies
K'Naan was born in Somalia, but he's lived in Toronto for the last 18 years or so, and has Canadian citizenship, so I can call him one of ours. Both of his albums (The Dusty Foot Philosopher and Troubadour) are absolutely amazing.

I don't have every Atmosphere album, but my favorite so far has got to be If Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold.  Slug needs at least an honorable mention, he's a major player in the underground scene and has been since 1991.

I think Vaudeville Villain is MF Doom's best, personally, but Madvillainy is also pretty great, as mentioned.

If we're going with just good bump-music or whatever i'd have to nominate Snoop Dogg's Blue Carpet Treatment.  It has its place, it's not as real as a lot of the true artists of the genre, but it's still pretty damn awesome.

Along with that, i'd nominate Stankonia as the best Outkast album.  It's just got a really important place on the list i think, or at least in my hip-hop collection.

Also, Deltron's Both Sides of the Brain is really good, and a project he was part of called "Handsome Boy Modeling School" released one of my favorite hiphop albums called So... How's Your Girl? which is really good as well.

I don't know if these qualify, because i haven't heard everything on the poll, but i'm just listing off some personal favorites.

Oh yeah, Tech's Revolutionary Vol.1 needs to be on that list.

Really, I don't even listen to rap that much, but that album changed my entire perspective of the genre. It is quality like nothing else.

Oh yeah, Tech's Revolutionary Vol.1 needs to be on that list.

Lemons is a decent release by Atmosphere.  Slug definately opens up with his drinking problem on that one, which is something that he really only joked about before.  Still, Lucy Ford, Overcast! and God Loves Ugly are far superior.

Vaudville Villian is a great DOOM album.  I think Madvillainy, however, is a more complete album.  Call me a sucker for intros/outros, but Madlib put together one of the most complete sounding CD's I've ever had the pleasure of hearing, mostly due to his intros/outros and the short length of most the tracks.  It all flows together so absurdly smooth.

I've always felt that Outkast is a bit overrated.  Public opinion aside, they are still a great group.  I'd have to give the nod to Aquemini as their best work to date.

Both sides of the Brain is actually just Del the Funkee Homosapien, not Deltron 3030.  Deltron 3030 is a group consisting of Del and Dan the Automator, who is also half of the group from Handsome Boy Modeling School, Prince Paul being the other half.

And yea, Tech's Revolutionary, Volume 1 is incredible.

Out of all the Atmosphere albums, You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having was definitely my favorite. All the others had a couple good songs, notably "Trying to Find a Balance" and "National Disgrace" in Seven's Travels.

Otherwise, my top five:

  • 5. The Torture Papers by Army of the Pharaohs.
  • 4. Tha Blue Carpet Treatment by Snoop Dogg.
  • 3. Human the Death Dance by Sage Francis.
  • 2. The Dusty Foot Philosopher by K'naan.
  • 1. Taste of Rain...Why Kneel? by Deep Puddle Dynamics.
