At first I was all like "Hey now, is it really wise to give my credit card number to the internet?"
But then I was like "Shut up dad! I can do whatever I want!"
That statement turned out to be untrue. When I revealed that I am not a U.S. citizen PayPal wanted me to register.

No problem, I thought. After filling out some registration info I thought to myself, "Boy, I could sure give this weeks cigarette budget to the less fortunate! I bet they smoke all the time!"
That's when I recieved this piece of information:

Check your card statement in 2-3 days and find the 4-digit PayPal code for the charge.

To me it seems like I have to do that before I'm allowed to send my money to strangers on the internet. Am I missing something obvious?

No, that's a normal verification process. They add a few pennies into your account and have the code located in the name of the depositor. They just want to be sure that you are the actual owner of the credit card and/or bank account.

I want to apologize for the tone of my previous post; I came across as terse and angry and poor Boonmeister thought I was lashing out at him. I didn't intend that at all, I was just frustrated that people were trying to make it a group decision when the very nature of forums (conversations happen over an extended period of time) meant that we would automatically miss out on the best opportunities. They really do fill up that fast. I think that the best that we can hope for is to nominate something here and trust that Wong will a) see it in time and b) agree that it is, indeed, cool and worth funding. As others have said, I think the screening process before we ever see the candidates is amazingly thorough.

I think we can do some amazing things here. I would hate to see the concept get lost in committee. I apologize if I inadvertently poured sand in any vaginas with my poor wording.

Kissies for everyone, and an initial $25 (there will be more) from Alderaan, Painhammer and Mr. Unpossible as soon as I finish typing this and get back to the Paypal link. I'm also sure I'll be funding stuff on my own over time, and I think this would be an incredible opportunity to teach Painhammer about helping people.

This is seriously the best thing ever, and I love all you guys so much right now I would swear I was drunk if I didn't know better.

These guys with cows (who I brought up in a previous thread) are still in need of loans.  I guess that cows aren't one of the more popular charities.

OK we loaned him the remaining $375 he needed.

After the transaction Kiva asked if I'd like to donate to help them pay their operating expenses, they suggested a 10 percent ($37.50) donation on top of the $375.  I went ahead and did that this time but we can decide in future loans if we want to keep doing that.

So $412.50 sent total.

Who's next?  One of the cow guys?

I like cows!

You're right, though, Alderaan. We could committee ourselves all over the place, and miss out.

Anybody have any objections to Cow Guys being the next recipients?

Cows sound good. I vote for them.

But I'd also like to nominate this guy raising pigs:

Sozandji LEGUEDE is a good and honest farmer in his area. In addition to agriculture, he raises pigs to stabilize his income better. The care he gives his pigs has made him a famous livestock farmer, renown locally for the size of his pigs. To do better and to have the greatest number of pigs, he would like financing to buy more piglets. Thus, he will be able to provide for his eleven children despite being 57 years of age.

DAMN, baby. He got it goin' ON.

I'm down with the cows, too.

And while the pants of Quagmar's man are, in a word, quite the shit, I'm partial to this guy:

Javid Rahimov

He looks like Niko Bellic if he had forewent his life of Grand Theft Auto and murder for hire and decided to raise cows instead.  This is our chance to turn Niko's life around!

But his pants aren't as cool, though.  I'm torn.

Awesome pants guy still needs $625.  Do we have a third vote for him?  And how much do we want to give?

We probably have like $750 left, it's hard to tell because the paypal total doesn't include payments that haven't cleared yet.

I think it would be cool just to finish off the loan, yeah it would use up most of our money, but who cares as long as its going to a good cause, right?  Plus I'm sure more donations are on the way, I plan on giving some more when I get paid next week.

Thirded for the awesomeness of his pants.

Aside from the thingy on our lender page telling what loans we've funded, we should have a little Hall of Loans here, showing the borrower and why we thought it would be cool to fund him in the first place. Lest we forget.

That sounds good.

I can throw more in the pot next month.

So, with the donations that haven't cleared, and several promises from people to donate next month, should we be considering the next candidate? Or should we hold off a week or two, give the pot time to fill up again, and then go from there?

Awesome pants guy gets my vote as well. It looks like my donation won't be cleared until June 2 according to paypal. I used my bank account instead of a credit card so that could be why.

Yeah, I just checked my PayPal account and it's not going to clear until May 28th - I also donated from a bank account.
