Do a search before posting a new link. I noticed that this wasn't actually stated anywhere, so I just thought I'd put up a reminder for people.

Just because a video or article or what have you is new to you, it doesn't mean that nobody's ever seen it before.  The web is a big place, and things may escape your notice for a long time.  So, if you come across something hilarious or interesting, please do a forum search before you post it to see if it has already been posted.

The search bar is in the top right corner, and if you click the red button without entering any text, it'll take you to a screen where you can refine your search, so that you can search the Mirth Canal forum for any previous posts of the link.  For search terms, use the name of the video/article/whatever, or if it doesn't have one, some keywords that describe what it's about.  This doesn't take long, and it stops the forum from being cluttered with redundant threads.

Of course, this works both ways.  When you do post a link, try and include the name of the link, or a brief description of what it's about, rather than just posting "LOLZ look at this hilarous video!!!1".  If it's a video that has a twist, either use a description that doesn't give it away, or post it behind spoiler tags:

Code:
[SPOILER][color=#F8F8F8]The monkey sniffs his finger and falls off the log![/color][END SPOILER]

Which will show up as:

[SPOILER]The monkey sniffs his finger and falls off the log![END SPOILER]

However, this will still be included in the search results.

If you're linking to a body of work that you've created yourself, keep it all within one thread. We don't need a new thread for every blog post you've made, every article on your website, or every funny video you've made.

You may continue to update your thread with links to your new stuff for as long as the community here is still discussing it. If the thread becomes just post after post of you adding more links, we may ask you to stop or lock the thread. The reason for this is to keep The Mirth Canal from becoming a self-promotion portal. Otherwise, you'd get into a situation where all of threads on the first page are just people updating their own threads.

Also, you don't need to pretend like your own blog or whatever is something you just happened to stumble on randomly and wanted to share. Just take credit for it and let us know you made it, because it's incredibly fucking obvious when you try to lie about it.

To clarify the last statement that Nav made, if you do post something that you "found" and it happens to be yours, it gets deleted or moved to the Hall of Bad Posts.  Just claim it as your own.  We really, honestly don't mind people posting their own shit in here.  But we do mind very much if you try to pass it off as some comedic genius that you happened to have stumbled upon.
