Yeah so right after I rescued two babies and a cat from a fire I got to read the books for a while.

They look really really good.  I mean both that the art and the layout are really asthetically pleasing but all the rules and meaty stuff that I looked over made a lot of sense.

So if you've any questions or concerns I'll do my best to answer them.

Skills.  No more skill points.  So now your just trained or untrained in a skill, and you have a certain list of skills from your class you can be trained in and humans get to be trained in one extra skill.  If your trained you get a like a +5 to the check, and if your not you can still try it with your ability score bonus.  I'm guessing you can be trained in more skills with feats or leveling up but I didn't check in that much detail.

Tumbling for instance isn't a skill any more but a special power that only rouges can get.

Man I realize this is nerdy as all hell but I mean it's Gamer's Quarantine. It is not like we are all into the injection of horse steroids and lengthy discussions on dead lifts and logging.

So I got a hold of the pdfs of the game through less-than-commendable means and I'm pretty impressed. The system just seems damn impressive. I did not get to play much of 3rd edition as my group of friends tends to focus on getting drunk and going camping but according to a friend that works at a game store, there's a fair amount of moaning and bitching about the changes. I think it is mostly the whining of those prone to whining to begin with.

But regardless, does anyone in the St. Louis area do this shit? It's the first pen and paper game I've been interested in playing in quite a time so I'm needing to find local people.

Holy crap, could you e-mail those pdfs to me?

I mean, so I can look through them between bear fights and time spent in the hot-tub with supermodels.

I think a reimaginging of D&D is long overdue, and apparantly this edition finally jettisons the crap 3rd ed left hanging on.

I'm excited.

I got all hyped up about D&D 4th yesterday, despite not having played 3rd in about two years (and despite knowing nothing about it despite skimming this thread), and promptly got up and walked into town to my local bookshop.

Apparently it hasn't come out over here yet. Seems like a bit of information I should have checked before going into town, but whatever. I nearly impulse-bought WFRP as a way to salve my blisters of impatience, but I held myself back. Money is short: that twenty could go on alcohol or drugs, I really don't have any right to go wasting it on roleplaying material.

They have a thing called D&D Insider, which is basically something you subscribe to on their site and it gives you access to some programs, lets you play D&D online. Like a program that lets you make a character and import it into another program which is basically a map simulator with a voice over dealy and a die randomizer so you can play online. It is supposedly A BIG DEAL. Depending on how much they charge for it, if there's any interest, we can get a big ol' nerdy PWOT game of D&D going.

Oh balls yes.

Since I'm buying a hundred dollars worth of books anyhow I'd hope I might get a month or three free anyhow.

I might just be down for that if I end up getting Insider.

Also, I am perusing the books and... this is very different.  It looks impressive, but I dunno how it'll play.  If it plays like I think its going to play then this is going to be just shit tons of fun, as well as hopefully being a lot easier for new players.

I really do hope 4E turns out to be an improvement.  I'm in the middle of building a campaign for my gaming group and I'm going to give 4E a shot since one of them is buying all the core books.  I'll probably buy them as well, if only to have a few extras so we don't have to pass around the PH when it comes time to level up.  I wasn't too impressed with some of the changes made in 4E, especially the changing around of races and classes, but I can deal, and from what I hear those are just a small portion of what's changed.  I was even going to add in my campaign a few features that are included by default in 4E, so I'm not against it even if I'm not overly excited for it.  Even if I don't use 4E for my campaign I'd still be up for joining an online PWOT game.

I'd consider joining a PWOT game, although we'd have to schedule it around my tri-weekly shark rodeos.

That does look hella fun. The most advanced D&D I've ever played was a bit of something like... Dungeon Master? a few years ago, which seemed very basic, so I'd be incredibly inept if the game is suited to those who really know what they're doing, but I'd love to play if there's room after you guys are all in and whatnot.

I would also be interested in such a game. My experience with D&D sounds a lot like Reverend's, but I've always wanted to give it a proper go. As long as it's not stupidly expensive.

Let's do it!

Anybody know if there's an option to legally buy pdfs direct from WOTC? I couldn't find anything on their website. Steve Jackson Games sells pdf versions of most of their books, and though there's a certain romance to having the actual books with that new-rpg smell, digital versions can be so much more practical.
