I'm revolted with amazement.

I don't care enough to read all the other posts, so I skimmed through like three pages then posted this.

My thoughts:

They're de-nerdining it. Well, fitting the "New Nerd" culture. The people who like to feel different, the ones who never quite learned who Gary Gygax was, or what books Isaac Asimov wrote, but still liked to feel a bit of Halo and a Lord Of The Rings movie inducted them into the weird, awkward halls of Nerdonia, into the Nerd Book Of Life. Hell, I barely feel I've deserved that, despite my severe nerditation. But, anyway, whilst more people play the occasional WoW session, the National Association for the Advancement of Nerd Peoples started by the previously mentioned Gygax is trying to appeal more to the Diet Dork crowd. Whilst also making it more complex for the ones who've played 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5, if that makes any sense.

I pretty much looked through it a little(We bought a DM's guide, Monster Manual, and a Player's, which is all you actually really need), said, "Mhmm... Mhmm.." Then read on, and proclaimed, "Yeah... Fuck that."

And I'm far too tired to make a coherent point, really. Sleep deprivation powers activate!

Thus we have still yet to sell/burn our 4.0 books, despite one of the 9 of us liking it.

It's pretty obvious that you didn't read this thread at all.

What do you expect from a nerd?

I have never really been into the tabletop games (though I love MMO's), but after listening to the penny-arcade DnD 4th edition gaming podcasts I am seriously considering playing. Maybe it's just the way they provided a hilarious gaming adventure, but it got me hooked on the idea. Perhaps it all just some shill, but I will give it a try.

Arise!

Have any of you guys used the web-based tools that Keth linked to a few pages back? I can't work out if there is some kind of sharing function. If, say, I use the dice tool, is Sloth able to see the results of my rolls?

[Edit] er, actually never mind. I did a little more reading and worked out that the trick is that the maptool has all the features we need.

Shit, the new penny arcade D&D podcast with Wil Wheaton playing with them has me considering playing 4th ed.
http://www.wizards.com/dnd/rsspodcast.xml  (at the bottomish - it's series 2)

But my question for you guys is: How did 4th ed work for you guys?

I'd be playing online with 2 or 3 people, using some form of a virtual tabletop, and vent.  Is it worth upgrading to 4th ed. or should we just go with the shit-ton of 3rd ed. stuff we already have?

And how did you're games work out?  Did they fizzle or are they still a weekly thing?

Proving once again that I am one of the lamest nerds on the planet, I tried the programs linked to earlier and couldn't really get them working properly. Apparently they don't have the too sets for 4E, which is what I wanna play since I like new, shiny things. I found a few zipped files in their forums that supposedly had what I wanted, but I couldn't figure out how to get them to work despite the instructions being posted right with them. Pathetic, I know.

That being the case, if anybody could help me get these things working, I would be forever in their debt. If we could start a GMT -7:00 group, that'd be awesome.

Also, read through the 2nd player's handbook, interesting stuff. I and the Goliath Rageblood Barbarian, Antaeus Stonetestes are looking forward to finally getting a game going.
