You know what? This actually sounds pretty good.

Ubisoft are developing a sequel to the original Far Cry. This has nothing to do with Crysis, and as far as I can tell, none of the people who worked on Far Cry are actually working on Far Cry 2.

Nevertheless, this game sounds like it may actually be more innovative than Crysis, if the quotes from this interview are to be believed.

Quote
The game's story is non-linear, dynamic, and procedurally assembled using a simple drama-management engine to populate the story with key characters, and facilitate the convergence of the story toward major climactic events.

The player's overarching goal is to hunt down and kill a man who is allegedly responsible for selling arms to both sides of a conflict in a failed African state. He is not only free to go where he wants in order to achieve this mission, but is also free to take missions for either of the game's principle factions who promise to facilitate him in his mission.

The player can work for either or both of these factions, playing both sides against the middle to keep them handicapped, and leveraging his reputation and infamy to maximize his gain while simultaneously working with autonomous AI "buddies" - themselves procedurally called into the story by the drama-engine to suit the needs of the narrative.

It's being developed solely for PC, which is a bit odd, but it means that the graphics and the interface won't need to be simplified.

The game actually sounds more like Stalker than Far Cry. Its promise of true non-linearity is pretty exciting - let's hope they pull it off.

A 'drama-management engine'? Someone give me one of these so I can STRAP IT TO MY FUCKING GIRLFRIEND BOOYAH IN YOUR FACE ANDREA DWORKIN seriously though Crysis was actually the reason I went back to college, since I can't afford a rig leet enough to run it less'n I get a decent-paying job. Unless Far Cry 2 bootstraps me into a degree it'll be playing second fiddle in the antechamber of my wish list.

That quote sounds like all of the worse parts of Deus Ex 2. Hopefully these guy's can pull of a setting that complex with all the factions etc.

Y'all be hataz, but I still reckon this game sounds pretty sweet. It's much more of a sandbox game than Crysis, and some of the descriptions remind me of a more action-orientated Operation Flashpoint - surely a good thing.

Far Cry 2 has just shot to the top of my "I want one of those" list.

If what that man is saying is true, you can set fire to the entire country.

Hell. Yes. Drama Management Engine? That sounds badass. Every time a company comes out with a procedural methodology improve games (e.g. procedural random level generation in the Diablo franchise), it's freakin' sweet. Nonlinearity is a great buzzword, but dynamically generated content blows its ass out of the water any day.

A lifetime of agonising disappointments has all but put paid to my expectations of ever seeing decent storytelling in videogames, so it's good to see the industry moving towards the kind of thing that doesn't actually need a story. Here's hoping for no cut-scenes and the back of the box just saying "Do what you want".

I dunno, this whole dynamic shtick has about the same chance of rocking our faces off as it has exploding in our faces.

Love the fact that it's in Africa, though. And the fire looks totally sweet, to the extent where it's my desktop background at the moment.

If I tried to set even a picture of that fire as my desktop, my computer would probably grow arms and try to pull my eyes out just so I could experience the pain it was going through.

Also, an actual 24 hour night and day cycle? So, if I start the game at 3pm real time, but game time the first "level" or whatever we're calling it starts at 8am, there's a 7 hour delay. Lets say I'm still playing at midnight. I'm tired, I want to go to sleep, but this camp I want to attack keeps whipping my ass in broad game-time 6pm daylight. So... what? Do I turn the computer off, go to sleep for 8 hours, turn it on at 9am my time and find that our intrepid hero is still stuck at 6pm, making me wait a few hours in game time for it to get dark enough to attack? Or do I have to leave the game on while I sleep with my guy hiding behind a tree praying that some of the autonomous AI don't decide they need a leak and don't want to use the camp's portaloo?

As nice as taking a break from flamethrowing people in the fucking face to watch a Serengeti Sunset might be, this just sounds stupid. But I'm probably missing something.

I think you're reading too much into the 24-hour night and day cycle.

While I'm not sure whether or not they'll have time sped up a bit (ie 6 game seconds for every real second) I highly doubt that they'll adjust the game time according to your actual time.

Because then loading a game in the morning would lead to major discrepancies when loading in  the evening. I think.

I think that it's just like Crysis, in that levels aren't scripted to be either day, night, evening or morning but rather that lighting and sun position changes as you play, real-time, nothing scripted.

Also, Ryan, you are quite clearly insane.

Look, I'm only going on what the disembodied voice on the video said. And he said dynamic 24-hour night and day cycle. If they're speeding it up to 6 game seconds for every real second, then I'd rather they called it something more accurate like... er... hold on a moment...

...I'd rather they called it a dynamic not-really-24-hour night and day cycle.

One thing I took notice of was when he said "we're going for realism, so no aliens and mutants etc". I just hope they stick to that because when I was playing the original a long time ago, I played through the first levels thinking it was awesome but as soon as the mutants showed up, I just switched the game off and never played it again.
Hopefully the guy wasn't bullshitting, because I'll definitely purchase this game if it comes with just human on human killing action, which is exactly the reason I'm not getting Crysis (also because my computer will explode even if I dare to run it).

I'll be happy with it if I'm able to skip cutscenes I've seen 50 times and be able to "savegame" when I want.

Developer video with some footage of the game.

Big huge open world, 50km2 of go-anywhere terrain. Stealth, sniping, utter chaos.

Personally, I can't wait to see (or use) the hang-glider.

I played Crysis, and I loved it, but I still think this game is going to destroy it.

I haven't actually played a Far Cry game since the first one, so this will be an interesting experience for me.

A video of it running on both 360 and ps3.

It looks and runs great on both, in case you were wondering. I feel like they didn't show enough of the combat and shit falling apart on the 360 part of the video, though.

All that free-roaming awesomeness, sexy visuals and an intriguing, apparently non-retarded narrative?  It's such a shame that Cam will never, ever get to play Far Cry 2.

Hey! Guess who I hate so much!

That's right! It's Sanchez The Fuckbastard!

I am currently listening to the Oblivion soundtrack which I just downloaded while waiting for the Diablo 2 soundtrack to finish downloading. And I'm reading a topic devoted to a game I will never play.

I'm going to close my eyes now, because that will stop the tears from gaying out of my face.
