Bettytron and I are fans of the Comics Curmudgeon.  As far as I know, it hasn't been linked in the Mirth Canal yet, which is a crime - although I'm sure many of you have seen it before.

"The Phantom" from June 4 remains my favorite so far.

This kind of spawned out of the xkcd thread.  These comics make me love xkcd even more.  I still don't know what the hell a "plugger" is.  Not sure if I want to know either.

Oh, Mark, Mark, Mark. You’re so eager to impress your chesty little friend that you’ve blown the cover off of your journalistic M.O. “Take a boring story from three years ago that nobody remembers, replace a few paragraphs with updated information, and … ka-CHING! Another fat paycheck, plus a free trip away from my Stepford Wife and freaky gap-toothed big-headed not-son!”

I’m pretty sure that panel two offers the first look at a dangling mouse corpse with its head half-masticated to ever appear in the comics pages.

I've been reading Comics Curmudgeon for around a year now, didn't know how many Pwotters were familiar with it.  Now I'll feel like more people are going to get it when I put together that AoJaD I've had rolling around in my head...

Yup, I've been reading Josh for awhile. He's responsible for my bizarre Mary Worth obsession last summer.

This guy is fantastic.  I spent hours last night reading the archives and laughing my arse off.  I did wonder though, who the hell actually reads the strips that he's snarking?  I've always heard webcomics artists complaining about how ugly and boring the newspaper strips are, but I'd never actually seen just how bad most of them are.  Mary Worth?  Apartment 3G? Mark Trail?  They're fucking awful.  The mind boggles.

In some of the better countries on this planet an idiot who keeps drawing comics about birds and airports would be considered a menace to society and promptly committed to the local asylum. That, or he'd be killed.

And deprive the world of this?

That settles the question from yesterday then.  He will not in fact be releasing birds.

Hooray for the coloring gnomes, who apparently noticed that the caption here makes reference to “leaves … starting to change” and actually colored the leaves in the background accordingly! That doesn’t forgive the obvious and unexplained dollop of red at the end of Billy’s football, however. The ball is too blunt to stab anybody with, so presumably our little towheaded psychopath killed an innocent in some other way, then dipped the football in the spilled blood, hoping to thereby gain totemic power.

Does that work?

Oh, Margo! So unused to being denied what you want for any length of time, you can’t help but race to the finish line the moment the L-bomb is dropped. I’d feel bad for you if you weren’t a preening, narcissistic sociopath with the blood of who knows how many innocents on your hands.

Eric’s fish-lipped look of horror in the final panel is definitely one of this strip’s classic moments. “Gosh, I always thought the moment I got engaged would feel … more special,” he seems to be thinking. “And I certainly didn’t think it would involve anyone dressed like Han Solo.”

I've been a fan of this guy for about a year as well. It actually makes these comics readable. Especially Marmaduke.

I’m always kind of interested in the flashback scenes in Crankshaft. This woman is (if I have the family relationships right, which I’m still not 100 percent sure that I do) the ’Shaft’s daughter, so it’s intriguing to see the man’s family when he was younger and maybe not so cranky and HOLY GOD WHAT ON EARTH IS THAT THING IN FRONT OF THE LITTLE GIRL’S FACE IN THE THIRD PANEL WHERE THE HELL IS HER MOM SHOPPING FOR ORNAMENTS HOLY CRAP!

Wow.

Look, I’d like to believe that I’m emotionally capable of dealing with Momma cartoons that allude to the title character’s sex life, but as it turns out, I’m not, so let’s not publish any more of them, OK? It would help, obviously, if there were some kind of joke in the strip, since that would keep our minds from otherwise orbiting helplessly around the words “emptiness,” “fill,” and “stuff.”
