So, I wrote this pseudo-review back when GTA IV first came out, and it took off. It ended up netting me something like 250,000 unique visitors that week, and was one of the top links on reddit for a good long while. Now, I've decided to spit right in those people's faces by writing this.

Am I out of line here? Has anybody else had this feeling about the game? I love it still, but it just genuinely makes me unhappy to play it. It's like an abusive husband and I'm telling all my girlfriends that I just walked into a door, that's all, it's nothing, really.

My wife and I having put many dozen hours into the game, I stand fully behind calling it the best game ever made, by far.  For every flaw (shooting not as good as in pure shooting games, driving not as good as in pure driving games) it's made up tenfold in depth and variety.  Everything is satisfying to do, crashing cars, blowing shit up, just walking through that jaw-dropping environment, it makes all the flaws go down easy.  And bugs?  I've run into exactly one.

And I assure you, I can find flaws in all of the greatest games ever made.  The question is are they fatal to the experience.

NOW

I have to qualify all of that, because I have not played the multiplayer.  I don't intend to.  Multiplayer may be a buggy disaster, I don't know.

But I think you're amplifying all of the flaws because of the natural impulse to resist popular opinion and to make yourself heard.  All those people gushing about the game were aware of the sometimes awkward shooting/cover controls (though superior from previous GTA games) and no one likes repeating the first bits of a mission every time.  But you have to look at the whole picture, and with everything together it's just a wonderful, satisfying game to play.

Well, the thing about op-ed pieces is that what's just a nuisance to you, can be ruinous to me. As for you running into exactly one bug...really? Do I just have the worst luck ever? Are you running it on the XBOX or PS3? It seems I literally cannot pick it up for more than half an hour without a distinctly noticeable glitch or game-ending instance of failed controls.

This is much more so for the multi-player than the story campaign - but it's not like they have different controls or physics. It's just that, for the most part, you tend to care less in the single player game if you die to a glitch, because a lot of the single player game is just fucking around on your own. You have nothing to lose. In the multi-player, it tends to actually win or lose you a game, and so you care a bit more.

Unless it's some subconscious motivation that I myself can never be fully aware of, then I don't think I was just playing devil's advocate for the sake of hits on this one. I really feel like the actual gameplay on display here is some of the least functional available for mass-market. The environment, the variety, the scope and scale of the city and its billion interactions make it a must-own for me, and I would easily tell everybody with a console that same thing. You have to have this, to see what they've done. Just try not to play the actual game, if you can help it.

And for the record, just walking around and exploring in the campaign is the single most satisfying experience in gaming on this generation of consoles. I actually didn't say these things make it fatally flawed to me, in the last paragraph I was careful to note that the flaws don't win out overall, but just barely. I thought it most interesting that its environmental and atmospheric aspects make it the best game I've ever played, hands down, while the gameplay mechanics and flawed controls make it one of the worst. The best game wins out, but I couldn't just pretend the other stuff wasn't there.

Playing free-mode in multi-player is still a blast, as is just screwing around in single player. But anytime there's something actually on the line, a win or lose situation (which, for me at least, is an important part of gaming in general,) I think GTA IV falls pretty flat.

I've had problems with the jump button sending me to my death as I jumped over a building's railing rather than on top of it, and the cover system is still a bit finicky, though I have practiced with it out of combat and gotten better with it, but I have never run into these game-ruining glitches and control screwups you talked about.

Not in single player or multiplayer. There's some texture pop-in on the stairs that always seems to happen in the Bohan apartment right when I exit it after saving or loading, but that's about it. The only glitch I have encountered is that cool one that launches your car a mile and twelve stories into the air off of that swing set in Broker.

I'm on the 360 version, by the way.

Speaking of the cover system and multiplayer, I have found the use of the cover system much more enjoyable in GTA 4 then in other on-line shooters whose cover system is supposedly better (GOW).  I played a lot of GOW, and while I would never have issues of not being able to blind fire or getting stuck in cover mode, in the on-line play I felt the cover system wasn't used properly.  Matches (this is my experience) in GOW always turned into everyone duck-running towards everyone else with shotguns and using the sniper rifle as a melee weapon.  I've enjoyed fire fights more in GTA, I actually feel pinned down.

So I just jumped back into the multiplayer today, after being without internet for a couple of weeks (just moved) and having just finished the story a couple of days ago.

And the first kill I got in deathmatch scored me the Let Sleeping Rockstars Lie achievement. Shit you not. Does anyone know how difficult it's been to get? Is it pretty common or did I just get incredibly lucky? Because I know something like a thousand people worked on the game, so there are probably a lot of targets out there.

Have you used your zombie? Hit the left button at the Player Model adjustment screen to use it.

Remora:

If you unlock the Let Sleeping Rockstars Lie achievement you get to play as a naked zombie in multiplayer.

I played as the zombie for a while, it was pretty funny. I heard it's not in the 360 version, any 360ers got the game and the zombie skin?

Yeah, i managed to get it on the 360. From what i understand, Let Sleeping Rockstars Lie isn't hard to get- you get it from killing Rockstar staff and anyone who killed them and anyone who killed them in turn and so on.

A similar thing happened to me. First or second kill I ever got in cops & robbers, and my first time trying any multiplayer other than a few minutes on free roam and deathmatch, I fired a bullet into a dude's windshield and got the achievement.

No, I think you only get it from killing an actual Rockstar Developer. I know mine was, I chased that bastard all over town and finally killed him with a flaming ambulance. I looked him up; he had the rockstar icon as his avatar and such.

The achievement is viral.  Kill someone who already has it and you get it.

My biggest problem is that I'm blind.  Well blurry eyed at least.  After working on a computer all day, when I play the game at night I can't read a single message that comes in on the phone.  Or pretty much anything on the phone at all.  Makes the message thing really annoying.
Same here, for a while, I've had less-than-stellar sight. I always wear my glasses when playing GTA4.
