If you haven't seen it yet, they added a new section to the World of Warcraft site called the Armory.
http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/You can look up people, along with entire guilds, and see all kinds of information about them, like gear, rep, honor, pvp standings etc. It's kinda like CTProfiles, only it updates every time you log out.
Of course, there are people against the idea and are claiming 'invasion of privacy' and "it might be used against me in an internet argument."
No I mean that website has more information that people can check. Like specs, reps and honor. They don't need to know how much honor I have or how much rep I have. I can see lot of people abusing this to put others down in irrelevant points.
This website shouldn't exist because people might comment on my talent spec.
Alright, I see both good and bad in this. I think it's a cool idea, and it's nice to be able to search the arena team placement and the guild as well as the idea of searching profiles, however, I can see where the character profile is a bad idea and this is why I find it so:
First off, levels will no longer be ?? to those who can no longer see them. What is to prevent me from now going "Oh no! Soandso just ganked me but I don't know their level or anything about them! Wait! Problem solve." *goes to site, looks up soandso's name on the character search for my server* Ah! Their a 65 with an assassination build and crappy armor! Well, now I know enough about them so I can report to someone else to gank them." For a pvp server, this is a really really bad idea. Initinally the idea of keep levels ?? where to make things a bit more challenging and I know a few people Blizzard has band because of them having a mod that reveals their levels to lower level players or 'estimates' their level by their gear.
Second off, I agree with the comment earlier that this would be alright if I could choose what would and wouldn't be shown to everyone. The gear, I truly don't care about, anyone can inspect me and see what i'm wearing, however, this too can be a downside for the other faction to figure out more on their oponent. I'm not sure if I like others looking at my build only because I dread the "your build sucks!" or "can I copy your build" or even the "wow! Your build is nice however, why don't you respect to blahblahblah". I find this may become very frustrating, and even may lead people to cookie cuttering and well, who knows from their on. Now, I don't know this for a fact, this is just my opinion and guess.
Blizz, I really think this is a good idea to a point, however, you have to look at it from a PVP perspective and see the downsides to what you're allowing the other faction to get an advantage of.
