I have a lot of similarities to the essential add-ons mentioned above. There is two though that I feel every Firefox browser should almost have as standard.

Xmarks. No, not porn, though even our sysadmin thought it was and blocked it initially. It synchronizes your bookmarks between all the computers you are using, across different operating systems and even completely different browsers such as IE and Safari. It does it transparently, fast, and securely. You can even let it sync your stored passwords if you're not especially paranoid. Bookmarks didn't have that much a use for me until I got this.

Read it Later. Lets you store the current page you're looking at or a page referenced to by a link. It stores the saved pages list both within your bookmarks (which incidentally makes for good synergy with Xmarks above), and under its own icon on your toolbar. Great for when you're browsing at work and want to reread something properly at home, or when you just don't have the time to give something your full attention. Charmingly enough it's useful for more than just the NSFW labelled links you find on this forum.

You know, the Doom9 forum has its own Firefox navigation toolbar.

I'm not implying that it makes them better than us or anything.

Cooliris makes searching though GIS or YouTube feel like Tony Stark's 3D holographic computer. Or something.

Fastdial is something I couldn't live without after using Opera. It turns your browser homepage into a bank of clickable visual bookmarks.

I'm trying to do this but I can't get the tabs to stack on the right side of the screen. Anyone got it to work?

Chatzilla is an irc chat plugin.

Colorful Tabs makes your tabs look real purdy like by giving them all a different color.

FoxyProxy is a proxy management tool. I don't even use this thing. I think I used it once or twice; it worked well enough.

Tab Scope lets you preview pages by hovering your mouse over their respective tabs. The preview pop-up is itself non-intrusive.

Webmail Notifier places a small button on the bottom right of the browser that will light up when you have new mail, along with a number that tells you how many you have. It's pretty useful.

Xmarks is probably the most important add-on I have. It's pretty cool. What you do is you sign up for their service(free ofcourse) when you download it. Afterwards it will sync all your bookmarks onto their servers as a backup. If you ever lose your bookmarks, then you can get them back with Xmarks. This also allows you to share the same bookmarks with different computers. I have more than 100 bookmarks, so this thing has saved me from a few heart attacks before.

I have more I use, but Bak and Rem pretty much already covered all the rest.

The one I use the most is Speed Dial, it allows you to designate websites to numbers on the top of the keyboard. Just press ctrl+# and it can bring up the page in a separate tab or on your existing tab. Fairly customizable and something that I can't believe I went without for so long. Speeds up web browsing exponentially by allowing me to check 9 websites effortlessly.

I understand not wanting to explain all of your addons, but why bother even posting the list, then?  This isn't the "show off how many Firefox addons you use" thread.

A few of these disable/replace one another but its all up to your personal preferences of course...

I use tons of add ons for firefox, too many to describe them all really....

adblock plus-automatically blocks banners and pop ups from sites, as well as being able to be set to block them.
babelfish- automatic translator, set what language you want translated into another language and highlight it/right click
bbcode- adds different BBCode, HTML, XHTML & Symbol options for formatting to the context menu for forums.
better youtube- Several scripts for the greasemonkey add on which adds a few options for playing and searching  on youtube
better privacy- blocks and/or removes long term non-deletable cookies
biofox
compact menu- combines your menu bar into a single selectable icon/button
custom buttons- large selection of custom icons to be used as buttons instead of the standard menu bar
download helper- makes downloading flash/embedded videos from various sites possible
embedded objects 1.9- download embedded objects from sites(inside embed, applet, object and bgsound tags).
firebug-Firebug integrates with Firefox to put a wealth of development tools at your fingertips while you browse. You can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page..
fireshot- screenshot/upload/edit anything on your visible screen
fission- Fission combines address bar and progress bar (Safari style).
flashgot-Download all the links, movies and audio clips of a page
foxy proxy-  FoxyProxy is an advanced proxy management tool that completely replaces Firefox's limited proxying capabilities
ghostery- alerts you when you visit a web site that has web bugs/hidden scripts on it.
ghostfox- Ghostfox stylizes Firefox into Ghostzilla (The Invisible Browser) style. Move your mouse away and Firefox disappears.
google enhancer- adds icons, highlighting, numbering and search options to google
greasefire- notifies you of what scripts are available for greasemonkey
greasemonkey- Allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript
iMacros- you can program multi step repetitive actions into this add on and have it do it for you at a press of a button
image fetcher- adds a save button to images when you hover the mouse over them
informenter-  adds a button next to fields where you enter screenames/passwords/etc and allows you to store the info for easy access
java quickstarter
Linkification- transforms urls into links automatically
media converter- when saving form a webpage, allows you to choose the output format
net framework assistant
multiple tab handler- adds options and capability when managing multiple tabs
new tab button position- small button next to open tabs which automatically opens another
noscript- blocks any active content on a website unless u allow it
personal menu- similar to compact menu(above)
show ip- shows the IP of whatever page youre viewing
skip screen- Skips unnecessary pages on sites like Rapidshare, Megaupload, zShare, Mediafire, and more
stealther- disables cookies, cache, browsing history, download history, saved form info, etc
stylish- change/manage user styles of your browser
tab mix plus- Tab Mix Plus enhances Firefox's tab browsing capabilities. It includes such features as duplicating tabs, controlling tab focus, tab clicking options, undo closed tabs and windows, plus much more
tab sidebar- keeps tabs in a sidebar instead of top of broswer window
thumbnail expander- Expands image thumbnails into full images and embeds some video links
toolbar buttons- more buttons to be used instead of typical menu bar
ubiquity-  very interesting add on im just getting to know...allows you to expand firefoxs ability where instead of just telling it where u want it to go(by typing in a url for example) you can tell it what u want it to do. (such as check weather, check facebook, etc etc)  im still learning about this one
unplug- another tool for saving embedded objects from websites
Web of trust- huge database of websites and how theyre rated on security and safety
Xmarks- bookmarking add on, very useful and saves ur bookmarks/passwords for retrieval later

Just thought Id post this in here since its relevant and not worthy of its own thread.

Firefox 3.5 came out recently and Ive been using it for about a week. Not too many huge changes in general functioning or looks, but it has stopped crashing on me. I was getting one or two crashes per day on a variety of sites and it was getting to be a pain in the ass. Whatever the problem was, they seem to have fixed it.

In regard to add ons, several of mine didnt work right away, but it does seem as though theyre being updated accordingly.  Overall a decent upgrade, especially compared to when they first switched to 3.0.

Sorry, forgot to mention that a 3.5.1 patch is being released shortly as well...

Tree Style Tabs is very useful if you tend to have a lot of tabs open at the same time. Since I've been using it I can't imagine browsing without it.

I'm using the Billeo add-on for managing my passwords. It is now compatible with Firefox 3.5. There are no security issues, as it is VeriSign secured and TRUSTe certified. For more info you can visit https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12715

cheers,

For those who use Tab Mix Plus, you can get the latest dev build here, which is compatible with Firefox 3.5: http://tmp.garyr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9864

I've been using it with no problems, though I've read there are still some bugs with the session manager, which I don't use.

Web of trust- huge database of websites and how theyre rated on security and safety

I used that until I found LinkExtend, which works even better. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10777

It compiles ratings from 8 different sites into one, including the WoT site. If you don't like LinkExtend's toolbar, you can right click on the main menu, go to customize, move its ratings button (and whatever other buttons you want) to wherever you like, and then hide the toolbar. The button/s you moved off of it will still work.

While i dont really use it that much, Ubiquity is a interesting firefox interface that allows you to use some sort of an API to do custom commands.

For instance, it comes with twitter and facebook commands so that you could...

Code:
highlight something->press ALT+z(or a combo of your choosing)->type"twitter this"

and it would post the selection in a twit.

The video on the site gives a better demonstration.

SmarterFox. Holy shit you guys. I usually keep FF pretty lean on addons and whatnots, but holy fucking hell. Right-click googling, page-to-page vertical scrolling, spell check, image and link per-page counter/downloader...man. I feel like such a fanboy right now.

Try it. You will not be disappointed.
