Since we have this about IE7 rapidly turning into a discussion about how to tweak firefox and which extensions to use, I thought there should be a thread for out favorite firefox extensions. Probably best to say if it doesn't work with FF 2.0.

Here are a few of mine:

NoScript: perfect for what it does, basically. You can allow, remove etc. scripts that appear on your webpage, it's extremely easy to use, and it works.

Adblock: it blocks ads. I like it

IE tab: stops me from having to use IE at all. Love it.

Tab Mix Plus: This allows you to customise what happens with tabs in all ways that I can imagine. The session manager is excellent too. Before FF 2.0 it was even more neccesary, but you could probably live without it now. It now works for 2.0 (for a while it didn't).

Download Statusbar: instead of having to look at another window to see how your downloads are doing, this puts little statusbars for each download at the bottom of the browser. Wonderful.

Google toolbar: I don't know how I'd browse without it. Saves you a lot of typing. Since when I first got Firefox it came with the google toolbar, I don't know whether this helps anyone.

Mouse gestures: lets you assign mouse movements to certain tasks, kist opening a new window/tab, reload, back & forward, pretty much anything. You specify which button you want to hold down to allow the mouse gesture, so you won't make any accidental gestures. I love it.

Last Tab: changes the Ctrl-Tab method of switching tabs to switch to the most recently used tabs, a la Alt-Tab in Windows.

Tabbrowser Preferences: More options for tabbed browsing.

Video Downloader: Download videos and embedded objects from most sites, including YouTube, Google Video and iFilm.

Adblock Filterset G Updater: Sounds like what it does. It periodically connects to a server and updates your Adblock filters from a centralized server.

Customize Google: Does everything from blocking google adds to getting rid of the spam counter in your g-mail account. Best of all, it can block the google tracking cookies.

DownThemAll!: A very nice download accelerator that is nicely integrated with FireFox.

Foxy Tunes: Sink it with almost any music player and control your playback without ever having to leave the browser.

Gmail Space: Similar to Google drive, use a G-mail account as a FTP server.

DisableBackspaceNavigation: This turns off the, well backspace navigation in FireFox. Good for fatties who can't hit keys around backspace without bumping it.

Flashblock: Because I hate Flash, but know I need to use it every once in a while.  This lets me determine when Flash runs.

I use a lot of extensions
Google Notebook - Allows notetaking while browsing
Reliby - Reloads all Live Bookmarks
ReloadEvery - Reloads webpages every so many seconds or minutes
StumbleUpon - browse the internet through interests
WebDeveloper - Adds a lot of Web Developer tools
ChromEdit Plus - A user Profile Editer
Download Statusbar - downloads are now on a bar instead of a new window
ExtendedStatusbar - Statusbar shows speed, percentage, time, and loaded size (like opera)
FoxClocks - shows the current time in the statusbar (usefull because I autohide my windows toolbar)
Gmail Manager - Keeps track of gmail accounts

also, I use this in my userchrome.css to give me lots of screen space

Code:
#file-menu, #helpMenu, #edit-menu, #view-menu, #go-menu {    display: none !important; }

#go-button-stack, .search-go-button-stack {
  display: none !important;
}

.search-go-button-stack { display: none !important; }

To look something up on google, I still use Ctrl+T, Ctrl+K, so no more need for the little box up there.

Doesn't work for youtube anymore. Plus, I've never been able to get anything that plays the files you get, the download from the hope page is broken.

Yeah, it does - you just have to rename the files, with the .flv extension. There's a few Flash Video players out there - I recommend you just pick up mplayer - it's free, and plays damn near everything you need it to.

MinimiseToTray is a handy little extension - moreso for Thunderbird than Firefox, admittedly, but it's worth a look if you're that type of person. You know. The type that likes a lot of icons in the system tray.

I'm sure it works if you have a player.... I just never bothered because the link on the extensions homepage to an flv player was broken and shortly after, youtube no longer worked with it (it simply doesn't download any file like it did before, and still does with google video etc.) so it wasn't worth me getting one anymore really.

I'm trying to look for an addon that I've forgotten the name of, that affected your tabs. Not only could you re-open closed tabs by clicking the middle mouse button on the tab bar, but it could also save your tabs when you close close Firefox and load them up again the next time you open the program.

Also feel free to post any other good addons here.

Firefox 3 has (slight variations of) both those features built in (you can right click the tab bar and select "Undo close tab"), but the addon you're thinking of is Tab Mix Plus.

Also, some of my favorites:

Firebug - Great for web developers
ColorZilla - Adds an eyedropper tool
Speed Dial - Gives you easy access to your most visited sites
CoolIris - Full screen, 3D image browsing (Google Image Search, Flickr, etc.). One of the best addons out there, really.
Download Statusbar - Get rid of that stupid Downloads window
Tiny Menu - Shrinks the menu (File, View, Edit, etc.) to a drop down list
PDF Download - Prompts you to decide whether you want to open or save a PDF, helps keep your browser from locking up for minutes trying to download some god-awful manual or something
FireShot - Take screenshots of web pages and add annotations and such without having to open in an external image editor
ReminderFox - Automatically remind yourself of shit
Adblock Plus - Get rid of ads forever
SkipScreen - Skip the 60-90 second wait screens on sites like RapidShare
iMacros - Automate shit you do often

Actually, I managed to find the one I was looking for. It's called Session Manager and it's simple as to use.

Does anyone know of a Firefox add-on to display bookmarks in multiple columns without scrolling?

There's an add-on that will give you three columns. It's still in development, though.

Oh, I did try that one earlier. Sorry, I should have mentioned that.

The problem with that one is it forces only the main bookmark menu to split into multiple columns (even if it isn't necessary), but all submenus still scroll. I'm looking for something that splits both the main menu and submenus, but only when it would otherwise have to employ the scrolling feature.

Thanks anyway, though.

Is there an add-on that will stop a page from automatically refreshing every few minutes?

I added a few from Remington's post and was most happy with adblock plus, so on that vein, are there addons that you would say to someone: "You're an idiot for not having this."
I'm just looking for things that speed up and simplify browsing, I can find the general "appearance/this is cool" ones.
I know this comes across as lazy, but it took me this long to get adblock plus so input is appreciated.

Most of my favorites have been mentioned, but a few that I find really useful are:

Photobucket Uploader - If you use Photobucket for your image hosting this is a must-have.  Allows you to right click on any picture and select 'upload to Photobucket' as well as copy the link code you want, without ever having to go to Photobucket.  Makes uploading pics about a million times faster.

StumbleUpon - Someone DID mention this one but it's so great I think it deserves a better explanation.  StumbleUpon lets you click a button to randomly 'stumble' to random websites based on initial search parameters you enter.  So if you like games, politics, and movies you let Stumble know and then you can just randomly explore sites related to that stuff that you might never have come across.  Some of my favorite sites of all time were discovered this way.

SearchIMDB - Allows you to highlight anything on the page and search IMDB for it.

CoolPreviews- Highlight a link and generate a window that lets you see what is on that page without even loading it.
