I hate that every time a fighter sustains a bad cut people immediately start calling for elbows to be banned. While you're calling for the banning of elbows, why don't you push for head-kicks and chokes to be outlawed? I just don't get it. An elbow is a very effective offensive technique in a fight that can do serious damage to a fighter. Why is it different from other techniques? Because it can cause a cut? Cuts are part of the game. Look how drastically it impacted Stevenson on the weekend. Why push to ban a technique that adds another layer of depth to the fight? Don't want to get cut? Defend elbows better. It's that simple.

The "rankings" topic is one that's frequently debated. I don't think you can "rank" a fighter based on their talent, and thus have to rely on what they've actually done in the ring/cage (and who's rankings matter anyways? It's not as if there is one governing body overseeing all of MMA that can establish universal rankings). I think, as Marcus Davis has argued, if a fighter has been completely inactive against top level competition for a period of time (and I think 18 months would be the perfect length of time), then they should no longer be "ranked". Yes, I believe Fedor is the most skilled heavyweight in the world, and I think he can beat every other heavyweight in MMA. But, if I was doing the rankings, he'd be dangerously close to being dropped from the HW rankings (as his wins over Coleman, Hunt, Lindland, and Choi don't exactly read like a who's who of top level heavyweights). However, if a fight is put together with Fedor and Barnett or Fedor and another elite heavyweight, I'd be willing to keep Fedor as the #1 ranked HW (assuming a victory).

Another good example is BJ Penn. I think he's the best LW in the world (and a win over Sherk would go a long way to proving that). But he can't be considered the #1 ranked LW in the world. Not when his only recent wins in the division have been over Jens Pulver (now fighting at 145 and coming off a loss to Joe Lauzon) and recently Joe Stevenson. You have to rank fighters by what they've done lately- it's the only method of approaching objectivity.

Intriguing card tonight. Not one that I am overly excited about seeing, but hopefully it comes through with some exciting fights. The top two fights are as difficult to predict as any main events the UFC has had in a while. Anyways, on to tonight's picks:

Tyson Griffin over Gleison Tibau. DEC 3. This should be exciting, as most Griffin fights are. I think Tyson's pace and control will be a little too much for Tibau, but I wouldn't be shocked by a Tibau upset.

Ricardo Almeida over Rob Yundt. SUB 1. I don't know anything about Yundt, other than the he's 6-0 with all his wins coming from some promotion in Alaska. Assuming Almeida's game is at least equal to where it was 3+ years ago, I predict he'll use his grappling to take Yundt down and work for a relatively easy submission victory.

Nathan Marquardt over Jeremy Horn. DEC 3. Marquardt's stand up is better, as is his wrestling. This fight will take place where Marquardt wants it to, and I think he'll use his heavy advantage standing up to set up a few takedowns. Dominant decision win for Marquardt.

Frank Mir over Brock Lesnar. SUB 1. Lesnar looks to be an extraordinary athlete, but I just think he's too green to be in there with a guy like Mir. Mir is far from a world-beater, but he is the most dangerous possible style matchup for Lesnar. I'm actually extremely surprised UFC threw Lesnar in there with a ground technician so soon. Lesnar takes this fight to the ground early, but Mir catches him with a submission (armbar) from the bottom fairly quickly.

Rodrigo Nogueira over Tim Sylvia. SUB 4. I'm worried that this fight has serious snoozefest potential if Sylvia uses his length to stay away and take pot shots at Nogueira while avoiding the takedowns. Contrary to what seems to be popular opinion, I think Nog is capable of more than holding his own in the standup game. I think Nog should be able to stay in Sylvia's face and eventually get the fight to the ground in the late rounds. From there Nog works the best submission game in HW MMA and chokes out Sylvia to become the new, err, "interim" heavyweight champion.

Horn almost got the gogoplata which would have raised his personal favourite ranking from "forgotten about" to 3rd place.

Nogueria has probably had HIV (from a hot Brazilian chick) and cancer three times each but come back to beat those diseases each and everytime. I don't know how he trains for that, it's simply incredible.

I thought Lesnar would win by decision grinding out a boring decision like most wrestlers do, but I was happy to see Mir get that leg-lock. UFC 81 was a great night for jiu jitsu.

I was happy to see the guy from Mythbusters win his fight against David Heath. I've been reading about the Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling team and those guys are insane. So anyone that appreciates Dan Gable is pretty cool in my books.

Nice prediction on Almeida, Hurtch.

Heh, Dan Gable is possibly the most successful coach in the history of sports. 9 national titles in a row, 15 total, and 21 straight conference titles? That is unheard of.

When I first heard Lesnar was going into MMA I thought it was absurd. Then I read up on the guy and found out he actually has got his act together, was an NCAA D1 national champ, so I'm actually looking forward to seeing him develop. I heard he wanted to fight someone legit right off the bat and that's why he got the fight he did. Can't remember where I read that, though.

And wasn't Fedor supposed to fight Couture? I thought that was why Couture left the UFC. What ever happened to that? Is it stuck in legal limbo?

Did anyone else think it was absolute bullshit that they stopped the Lesnar/Mir fight for "hitting in the back of the head," handing Mir the fight on a platter? I've NEVER seen them stop a fight and stand em up for that. Fucking bullshit.

Steve Mazzagatti is awesome.

"Georges! The back of the head, watch it!"

"You should probably consider not hitting the back of the head, Mr. Georges St. Pierre!"

But hey, I'm not complaining. I wanted GSP to win, and I wanted Mir to win.

And wasn't Fedor supposed to fight Couture? I thought that was why Couture left the UFC. What ever happened to that? Is it stuck in legal limbo?

I think it happens in August or whatever, when Couture's UFC contract is out. And if Fedor beats Barnett and/or Schlit.

I'd be extremely surprised if that fight ever comes off. Couture seems to think he will have satisfied his contract by August, whereas the UFC obviously thinks he has 1 fight left and cannot fight elsewhere until he has done so in the UFC. Couture will probably wait until then to sign a contract for a fight, at which time Zuffa will probably try to step in. It seems almost certain to me that this will end up in a lengthy court battle. It's really too bad, because I think that's the best HW fight to be made.

UFC:82  this saturday.    Time for predictions.

Silva vs Henderson - This is going to be a war.  I think Henderson will come out and try to stand with Silva and take some damage. Second round will go to Henderson as he tries to keep Silva down. Silva wins in the 3rd round by reversing Henderson on the ground and wins with strikes.

Herring vs Kongo - 1st round submission for Heath. Kongo's ground game is no match for him.

Sakara vs Leben -  As much as I dislike Leben, I think he'll take Sakara down into the cage and pound out a first round stoppage.

Okami vs Tanner - Tanner by split decision.

Wilson vs. Fitch - Fitch by 2nd round rear-naked choke.

O'Brien vs Arlovski - 1st round submission by Arlovski.

The rest of the winners:  Koscheck, Sanchez, and Gurgel.

I will say up until UFC 81, I had been wrong about almost every main event in the last year in this crazy-ass sport before Big Nog finally saved me, so expect these predictions to be wrong.

Silva vs Henderson - Henderson by decision.  We haven't seen Silva in a long fight since his Pride days, so it will be interesting to see how he does after 2 rounds, because we know Henderson loves those late rounds (assuming he isn't knocked out before that.)

Herring vs Kongo - Heath looked to be in better shape at the weigh-ins than in his past few fights, and I would love for him to get the win here, but I have a feeling Kongo wins a decision.

Sakara vs Leben - Leben sub

Okami vs Tanner - Okami decision

Wilson vs Fitch - Fitch sub

O`Brien vs Arlovski - Arlovski TKO

Sanchez vs Bielkheden - Sanchez by whatever he wants

Koscheck vs Hazelett - Hazelett upset special

Awesome main event tonight. This fight should be top-level MMA at its finest. This has probably been my most anticipated fight of the six months or so. Decent undercard too, but this event is all about Henderson/Silva for me.

Anyways, predictions:

Anderson Silva over Dan Henderson. TKO 4. A truck pick 'em fight. This fight is going to be decided in the clinch and by who can impose their style. Silva's going to look to keep his hips clear and use his thai plum to control Dan, whereas I think Dan will look to use body control to get Silva to the mat. Problem is, I can't see Henderson being that effective once the fight hits the floor. A long fight gives Silva plenty of opportunities to land damaging blows, and I think the accumulation of damage stops Henderson in the fourth.

Cheick Kongo over Heath Herring. DEC 3. I'm not impressed by either of these fighters- Heath hasn't looked great since coming to the UFC, and Kongo has major holes in his game. Heath could win this fight by working constantly for takedowns, but instead I see him engaging Kongo in the stand up and losing a three round clinch fest.

Yushin "Thunder" Okami over Evan Tanner. DEC 3. Let me first say that Okami is one of my favourite fighters to watch. His methodical dismantling of other fighters intrigues me. I'm also excited to see Tanner back, but I think Okami will be just too strong for Evan. Tanner's tough, but Okami dominates him for three rounds.

Chris Leben over Alessio Sakara. SUB 2. Leben is the more well rounded mixed martial artist, and I can see him catching Sakara with a kimura early in the second round. Should be a slug fest on the feet for a while though.

Jon Fitch over Chris Wilson. TKO 3. Wilson's crafty on the feet and could frustrate Fitch for some of the first round, but I think Fitch's takedowns and top control will just prove too much for the game Wilson. Fitch pounds Wilson out from the top late in an entertaining fight.

Undercard winners: Arlovski, Cummo, Koscheck, Sanchez, and Halverson (because Gurgel sucks)

I was reading some rumours on the internet and it seems that in the next Saw movie one of the victims is going to have to fight Anderson Silva to try to save their life.

Of course I'm back on my losing ways as far as predictions goes.  I knew Silva was a favorite to win that, but I figured Dan would give him at least a LITTLE bit more of a challenge.  Christ.  I don't know what else he could possibly do now besides maybe fight Filho from WEC or move up to 205.  There was also talk of him wanting to fight Roy Jones Jr. in a boxing rules match (which I think would be a huge mistake.)

I'm so happy for Heath that he won.  That's the best shape I've seen him in since his early Pride days.  This was actually the best fight I've seen Kongo in - his ground game has improved dramatically, he's just got to work on his control so he doesn't get reversed so much.

Lesnar vs Coleman is going to equal a brutal beating on Coleman.  This isn't the type of fight he should be taking at this age against a much younger and much, much stronger version of himself.

Post UFC 82 reflections:

So I've had a few days to reflect on it, as well as watch the fight a few more times, and Anderson Silva's performance was remarkable. The power of his strikes on the ground is unbelievable- he's absolutely killed two guys with ground and pound who'd never been KO'd before (Marquardt and Henderson). He hurt Dan badly, which I think is the reason he was able to tap Dan relatively easily. That body-triangle of his is a pretty deadly weapon as well. Henderson looked game in the first, but you just can't make a mistake against Silva. He hits too hard and too accurately to give him an opening.

As for what's next for Silva, I think it has to be Okami. Okami's earned the title shot, and he is actually a good matchup with Silva. Anderson's a big favourite in that fight, but it's one I definitely would like to see. Plus there's history there, with Okami being the last man to post a victory over Silva. Okami looked good in dominating Tanner, and it was nice to see him get the finish he has been working so hard for lately.

I am still feeling sick to my stomach after the monstrosity of Herring-Kongo. That had to be one of the sloppiest fights I've seen in a while- brutal grappling. I guess it was a little more entertaining than I had predicted, buy my god, learn how to maintain positioning.

Leben hits hard, and he's always a fun guy to have on the card. I'd like to see him matched up with a bit higher level competition than Sakara though.

Chris Wilson was impressive in defeat against Fitch, and I'd like to see him back in the UFC (as I'm sure he will be). He's an all around scrappy guy, and he could have won that fight if he'd kept coming forward and putting his hands on Fitch as he was in the first. I'm looking forward to Fitch-St. Pierre (writing off Serra), although I think GSP dominates him.

That is all. Oh yeah, Jake O'Brien sucks.

I met Henderson this weekend down in Atlantic City.  He was cornering a guy (who, incidentally, won by DQ following six [four called, two told to fight through] nut-shots) on the card I was attending.  I was in the casino afterwords and my friend saw him and went to get a picture with him.  While he was doing so, Jason Miller, clad in a fur coat, saw that my shirt had Miller Brothers MMA on it and came up to me and asked who they were and if he was related to them.  Hendo seems like a really good guy, since roughly every time we saw him throughout the casino he was stopping to pose with fans. All-in-all, Henderson is just as intimidating-looking and Miller is just as much of a goof (whether you like his shtick or not [I do] I'm pretty sure it's who he really is) as I had always pretty much assumed.

Also, one of the fighters I was there for got a frontpage story on Sherdog and MMAWeekly out of the fights, which while meaning very little to everyone else here, I found to be rather awesome.

I'm assuming that's the Ring of Combat show and Jim and Dan Miller you're talking about SteelFan. That was the first time I've had a chance to see Jim Miller fight, and he looks to be a solid up an comer. I haven't seen Dan's fight but I read it was stopped early because of an accidental head butt.

Sounds like you had a good weekend. Keep us up to date on what's going on with the Millers.

Dan Miller - youtube dan miller Brutal Guillotine Choke . That's Dan
Jim Miller - up and comer? Definetly. His ground game only gets better each time i've seen him.

The Miller's are still learning more and more ground game which is bad for their opponents because as they learn more technical fighting that only makes them more dangerous.

Busy week of MMA coming up.  I'm pretty psyched for the upcoming Fight Night card, particularly Lauzon-Florian, since I think both have greatly improved since their respective debuts.  I don't really have a rooting interest in it, since I've grown to like both of their fighting styles, I just want a good fight, which I like the chances of.  I'm also looking forward to Pelligrino-Diaz, since Pellegrino is a local guy for me, and of course Edgar-Maynard if they put it on.

It's going to be a pretty bitter-sweet card to watch for me though, because my brother-in-law Jim was actually signed, contract in hand, to fight Marcus Aurellio after Fisher went down, but couldn't due to a contract with the IFL that he had signed days before Fisher pulled out.  It's pretty frustrating because he said he was hurt for awhile but hoping it would clear up, and so it's hard not to think about if he'd just pulled out a few days earlier.  Now, instead, Jim's fighting for the IFL Friday against Bart Palaszewski.

Then there's also the TUF debut, which is also gonna be kinda odd to watch, because on the one hand, I do enjoy free fights, and a local guy who's a friend of the Millers is on it, and good, but on the other hand, Dan was supposed to be on it too before breaking his cheek in a win two days before his flight to Vegas, so I'll again be sitting at home enjoying it but kind of pissed my guys aren't on it.

Really excited to see tonight's event. I can't remember the last time the UFC put out a card with this many competitive match ups and so many potential fight of the nights. So props to Zuffa for putting together this card, and props to Spike for giving it a 3 hour time slot.

I could see quite a few fights on this card going either way, but I'm going to try and make picks on the relevant fights anyways:

Kenny Florian over Joe Lauzon- SUB 2. I think Lauzon's been a bit over-hyped. The biggest win of his career is Jens Pulver, a guy who's been known to get KO'd when guys can connect with his chin. Other than that Joe's lost to every high caliber fighter he's fought. I don't think Lauzon has anything for Florian other than maybe his wrestling, but I expect Kenny to dominate this fight and take another step up in the crowded 155 division.

Karo Parisyan over Thiago Alves. DEC 3. Should be a battle, but I think Karo's top control and pressure may wear down Alves en route to a tight decision win. Alves' low kicks could change this fight though.

Tim Boetsch over Matt Hammil. TKO 2. I sense from the Bisping fight that Hamill may have fallen in love with his hands, and now he's in there with a guy with more power than he has. Matt tries to take it to Tim on the feet and gets caught with a punch somewhere in the second round.

Nate Diaz over Kurt Pellegrino. SUB 3. This should be an upset pick, except for the fact that Diaz is favoured in the betting lines. I think he catches Kurt with something crafty from the bottom late in the fight.

Other picks:
Alexander
Edgar
Thomas
Aurelio
Gamburyan
Guida
