Oh Cecil...

Quote from: Cecil Peoples
“First of all what you need to understand is that from where the judges are sitting, we get to see things that the fans at home may miss. Mauricio Rua was being aggressive but it wasn’t effective aggressiveness which is what we as the judges look for when scoring a fight. The way I saw it, Lyoto was landing the more cleaner and damaging strikes throughout the fight – if you take a look at the judging criteria clean strikes are valued more-so than the quantity of strikes landed. Although Rua threw a lot of low kicks they were not as damaging as Lyotos diverse attack in the earlier rounds which is why I scored the first three rounds for Machida. You have to keep in mind we always the favour the fighter who is trying to finish the fight, and leg kicks certainly don’t do that.”
They certainly do sometimes. So do bodyshots. Only someone who was never hit by a legkick would say that. He also hit Lyoto to the face, which can be attributed a great deal to the leg and bodykicks who slowed Machida down. He damaged Lyoto's legs, body and face way more than the other way around.

Quote from: Cecil Peoples
“When both fighters are engaged in a striking match what I always look for is the fighter who is being judicious, picking his spots, being accurate and landing the cleaner strikes which ultimately is what Lyoto did more effectively than Rua. Lyoto made Shogun come after him, he determined where the fight took place which in my opinion constitutes as effective Octagon control. I recognize the fact that Rua did have a few takedown attempts during the course of the fight however Lyoto defended them all successfully which counts as effective grappling in his favour, where as ununsuccessful takedown attempts are not scored at all. Therefore going by that criteria, I believe Lyoto won the fight clearly. I’m just glad the other judges on the panel saw it the same way and I’m sure the fans who understand the technicalities of the sport agree with the decision too.”
What? Being passive and letting the opponent come to you counts as Octagon control? That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

This seems like a slam dunk, but due to free-TV, UFN's get more viewers than PPV's, right? I'm not saying a certain middleweight fight got moved to UFN 20 to replace a departed curly-haired wrestler, but if that did happen, that would mean more people get to see it, yes?

I know it's easy to overvalue recent things (as best/worst) since they're fresh, but am I wrong in saying this has been by far the most boring season of fights ever? The fact Dana was excited after the first round of "a great fight" had me actually mad. That was awful. Again. They gassed in two minutes. Again. There was back-turned running. Again. And plenty of hands held protecting the hips. Again.

After hearing even the other side praise Junk as better than Rampage even knew, that is how he fights. Really?

Just awful.

Also, that's what I thought about UFN-PPV, though it's irrelevant now. An opponent changed their mind about accepting the fight anywhere but the PPV (I guess to get in a full camp maybe?) so instead of co-main event on UFN 20, it's going to be a freaking dark bout on the PPV, as apparently shifts to the card thanks to the chain of stuff coming from the Brock injury is going to get the fight bumped off the main card. That really blows because 1) Sponsor money for a co-main event on a UFN is much more than a dark bout on a PPV, 2) it means he could potentially be out for the fight for the birth of his second child, which would not have been a concern with the fight getting moved up to January, which would be good both for having his head in the fight and for the obvious personal reasons. Also, when it was on the UFN (for like, two hours) my sister was going to be able to go, and it was going to be really convenient because my girlfriend goes to school an hour from Fairfax, where the fights are going to be. In short, curse you, not-officially-confirmed opponent. Curse you.

So, last night was my mom's first fight.  I was telling people yesterday that my mom is a fight promoter and they answer back, "You mean like, for Halloween?"  It's so weird.  You'd have to know my mom to know how bizarre this is for her character.  She is a grandma who is active in her church groups and one day, just decided to be a fight promoter.  We had a really good turn out.  Michele Vera's opponent chickened out at the last minute and we had to scrap that fight and one other fight that the CSAC didn't approve of.  Fabricio Werdum came down (I took pictures with him after the fight, but my camera ran out of batteries, so my brother is e-mailing those to me).  Cris "Cyborg" Santos was there.  Dean Lister was there.  I know we didn't have any pics on the webpage of the ring girls, so I took a bunch myself.  I kept trying to get good shots of them with the high speed camera, but they were all so dark (the pictures, not the girls).  I showed them the vids I took of them and they loved them and kept taking me o places with better light to get better videos.  One of them tried to take me back into the locker room (they were strippers from Hustler Club, by the way), but the security guard wouldn't let me back there, so I had to make some movies with them outside the stripper lounge.  Then, they all asked for my phone number to get copies of the movies and I grabbed my wallet to get business cards.  I almost gave them my debit card and told them to take it and call my bank and ask for my address.  So, I had to go get some paper and a pen from my mom so I could get the strippers my phone number.  Anyway, without further ado, here are the pics and the highlight reel I made (I shot most of it in high speed at 210 fps):

For some reason, every picture I've ever seen of Werdum looks like he has been photoshopped in.  Kind of like he is just out of phase with reality.

Strikeforce press conference was today

They had the new WAMMA belt there which was hideous but its not even a fight for the Wamma title.
Fedor was aked about his sweater and he chuckled which terrified me for no particular reason.
Marloes Coenen is beautiful but theres something about Roxanne Modafferi's nerdy look that makes me fall in internet love with her

Here are my predictions for the Strikeforce card tomorrow.  Keeping in mind that I usually am wrong:

Fedor vs Rogers.  I would love to see an upset, even though I like Fedor. But the only real question in my mind about this fight is whether or not Rogers lasts longer than Big Tim.  Fedor by 1st round choke.

Mousasi vs Sokodjou.  Mousasi via 2nd round arm bar. Cautious start, fireworks to close round 1, Soko gassed and Mousasi finishes him early in the 2nd.

Mayhem vs Shields.  Shields by decision. I think it'll be entertaining, but only because Mayhem has an uncanny submission defense that'll get him to the end of the fight.

Werdum vs Silva.  Decision for Werdum after a boring, slow pace fight.

Not going to make any undercard predictions because I honestly don't know any of the fighters on it.

The Sherdog play-by-play made the Fedor/Rogers fight sound more competitive than I expected. One writer gave the first round to Rogers and they commented a lot about Fedor's cut. I wish I could have seen this one.

Okay, so I watched it. After Fedor wins he gives a little fist pump. If we lived in the world from Equilibrium we'd finally have a case to murder Fedor!

Also, I just saw the overhead camera view of the knockout. Fedor punched Rogers in the face the same way I punch this thing:

Those punching machines are no slouches

Bigfoot-Werdum was a really entertaining fight
Mousasi-Soko went mostly as predicted but mousasi was tested in the 1st round, and that takedown usig just his legs was awesome.
Mayhem-Shields kind of disspointed me, in the fact that it went as a lot of people predicted, control by shields and not much else

I feel like a sinner for having an inch of doubt when watching Fedor

1.  Absolutely. Werdum looked in-shape and confident.  Let's hope he stays that way.  Bigfoot looked good too, but that gas tank may need a little expansion.

2.  Shields via Human Blanket.  You can't blame Mayhem, though.  He tried his best to make it a fight, but what can you do when the human tarp drapes himself over you.  Shields got saved by the bell from that choke.  Mayhem earned a few extra respect points.

3. You are very lucky that our Fedor is a a forgiving Fedor.  If he wasn't, all of the unimaginable fury stored in the Sweater of Incredible Awesomeness would rain down on you like the wrath of 10,000 rabid polar bears.

I think Silva couldve won if he just kept it standing, but he tried to go to the ground with werdum which is not smart.

I think Shields fought a smart fight but not a very entertaining fight, yes he had effective grappling since he improved position every chance he got but wasnt aggresive with his sub attempts which surprised me, but it was the best gameplan against Miller

I swear I heard Frank Shamrock call Sokodjou "Sudoku" at least once.
