Just finished watching this. Holy shit, I'm amazed.

Not only is it actually a GOOD Final Fantasy movie, it's so unbelievably beautiful to look at. I spent most of my time admiring the visuals.

The plot is actually fairly strong, and continues where the game left off (2 years later). All the characters we know and love are represented in the movie, in addition to some new ones. It's not dialogue heavy, but the conversations that are there are the traditional quirky Japanese anime-like "I'm not alone!" revalations.

I really don't want to give anything away, but it's very hard not to because there were so many great parts. I'll just say that there was a scene with a certain character's cell phone ring tone that made me pause the movie because I was lauging so hard.

The fight sequences are jaw-dropping. I've never seen such intense sword fighting in a movie before. It was all done with the traditional Final Fantasy over-the-top style (limit breaks, summons and characters flying throught the air for minutes on end) as well as a materia-equipping scene that made me giggle with delight.

Unfortunately not everyone will enjoy it. Square is targeting a very specific audience with this movie, which of course is the relatively small group of people who played and finished FF7. Anyone else would either not care, not get a lot of the characters (many of which are never named because they really don't need to be) or have to have a lot of it explained to them before and during the film.

Overall: Amazing. Intense battles and a joy to look at. If you enjoyed Final Fantasy 7, your penis will become erect with delight watching this. Just be sure to see a doctor if your JRPG boner lasts longer than 4 hours.

I believe Cross got the ripped version with english subtitles that's been going around the interweb, since I'm not sure it's out in the states yet.

It's not.

I saw the ripped version with english subtitles. Even though I never played the game and had it explained to me before watching the movie, I enjoyed it. I would have enjoyed it more if I knew all the in-jokes and if I was just so excited to see characters, etc.
The graphics were amazing, and the entire movie as a whole was very impressive. My FF friends fell in love with it, so I'm guessing it did not dissappoint.

Yes, I neglected to mention I watched the sub. It was a fansub too, and was very well done. The problem with the sub is that there is so much to see that you miss while reading.

As with every japanese movie/anime ever dubbed, I'm expecting it to be ruined.

The fight scenes were amazing, and that the entire movie kind of feels like an hour and a half long fight scene is a good thing.

Two problems with it that I noticed.

First, Cait Sith. Wtf.

Second, it kind of seemed like one gigantic ad for cell phones, which I believe I read somewhere, they're selling a version used by the characters. Like that matrix phone. Tons of scenes with characters chatting away on cell phones, asking to borrow others. A scene of a cell phone floating through water and various people called and left friendly messages. One characters enters to save the day and instead of saying "Time to ride the knuckle train to face town", he says "where's the phone shop?" It got really out of hand. Cloud inserting materia into his cell phone, a cell phone dodging in front of a bullet to save a girl, even a cell phone wielding swords and fighting one of the main bad guys.

Final Fantasy? More like... um... Final... Final PHONE-tasy! Hahah!

I, as someone who's a FF fan but thinks FF7 is majorly overrated, completely loved it.  The action sequences where instense and awesomely insane.  I always like seeing a FF universe in motion, where, say, Tifa still runs a bar and Cloud runs a delivery service, but either of them can jump far into the atmosphere at a moment's notice.  And of course the "cameos" by every character under the sun was pretty keen, too.  Okay, yeah, I'm a fanboy...

And I really have to agree with Cross on the whole sub thing.  I wasn't going to watch the movie again after seeing it the first time (subbed), and wait until the American release for a re-viewing.  I was not that strong.  I decided to watch it again without subs, and I really did notice a lot more when not trying to read along.

Oh, and on that second viewing I decided to caption the hell out of the first forty minutes, and it's here.  It's 70 screen shots and moderately amusing, but be warned, as it does ruin the first half of the movie.  "Ruins" is the operative word.

I've been looking forward to it for a while, but haven't seen it yet.  I haven't fully decided whether to look for a subtitled version or wait for the dubbed one.

In my somewhat limited experience with anime, I'd guess the subtitled would be the better route, but we'll see.  I'm intensely jealous of all of you that'v seen it, by the way.  Bastards.

If you like sword fights, guns, motorcycle chases, or fights using swords, guns, and guns that are also swords between people on motorcycles chasing other people on motorcycles through cramped tunnels then you will probably like the 7 minute sequence in Advent Children that contains all of that, and more.

And that is one of the less extreme things to happen in the movie.

I loved it. The girl sitting next to me started crying, and it was the second time she was seeing it. Never played any FF, but there's swords and motorcycles, and the characters aren't above any novice's head. It's all adrenaline and heartstring. Did I mention that there's a sword that's a gun? Oh Japan.

I haven't played FF7, or any of the other games and I thought AC sucked. Fair enough, I didn't really "get" the full depth of the story but at least the film was visually fucking amazing.

It was awesome. I loved it.

I had a long conversation with my girlfriend about it after we both watched it. It gave me a newfound respect for the Turks, for Cloud, for pretty much every character with significant time on-screen. (even Sephiroth, who apparently has gone from completely crazy to just being pure immortal-god evil). The fight scenes were all insane and hard to follow at points, but gorgeous enough so just letting it all soak in was good enough.

Not that much character development, but none really needed to be there. This was just another meeting with old friends - it's obviously supposed to just be for dedicated FFVII fans.

The final sequence (Sephiroth!) was stunning, the plot was much more interesting than I thought it was going to be, the music was excellent throughout (I also laughed at the cell ringtone), but the graphics were obviously the high point. I have never seen and doubt I will ever see again a man do those things with a motorcycle.

I can only hope they do a movie for FFVI someday that's as entertaining as this. But something I need clarified, (SPOILERS)that was Zack with Aeris at the end, right? Did I miss something in the movie or game as to why he'd be there with her, or not?(SPOILERS)

Spoilers:

Zack and Aeris are the two people whose deaths Cloud can't forgive himself for - Aeris died right in front of Cloud, and he thinks it's his fault she was killed and that he should/could have done more to save her. Zack was killed trying to save Cloud from the Shin-Ra soldiers just before they could get into Midgar. Cloud's been trying to live two lives ever since - his own, and Zack's. Their appearance at the end is part of him being able to get over that guilt and pretense -- they're saying their final goodbyes to him, in a way, so that he can move on from out of the burden he put on himself for their sake.

As someone who's been very vocal in railing against the mere concept of this movie before it was even a twinkle in the developer's eyes, please tell me one thing:

Do they utterly sodomise the original masterpiece by doing any of the following:

1) Giving easy answers to the question of Cloud's being a clone?

2) Reviving Sephiroth?

3) Anything *anything* involving Aeris?

4) Play down Cid's violent misogyny?

5) Explaining Vincent's past?

Generally speaking if, like me, you thought that FF7 was one of the greatest games ever put to console, will watching this movie make me want to tear my eyes out of my head; much in the same way I'm informed I'd have blinded myself if I'd ever watched the D&D movie.

Yes, I'm a nerd. I make no apologies.

No, clone plot never even mentioned.

Cid doesn't have enough lines to know.

5) Explaining Vincent's past?

No. Leave that for Dirge of Cerberus.

In its defense, 3) serves an important purpose and 2) is done in such a way that I didn't mind after it had happened that it had, despite reservations. It basically ends as fast as it starts.

I like Cloud's new composite sword made of other swords. They made his improbable weapon even more improbable, and yet also more awesome.

I actually only...skimmed through some of the movie, and did not see every single scene. Exactly how much of that cellphone line stuff is bullshit?  I did see a rather large amount of cellphonery, but...
