Does anyone know a good flv to avi converter that doesn't leave a watermark?

This isn't at all what you asked for, but I thought perhaps you needed an flv to avi converter because you don't have anything that plays flv files.

http://www.bitcomet.com/tools/flvplayer/index.htm

Not a converter, but plays flvs great.

I have a few programs that can play flv files, but what I need is something that can take parts of the videos and turn them into animated gifs. Most animated gif programs need the movie files to be either avi or mpg, hence the conversion. The only few I've found that can convert well leave watermarks on the avi files unless you pony up some cash. I don't mind paying, but I'm just wondering if there's a free program first.

So, does anyone know of a program that can cmpress video files to smaller sizes without losing crap ton of quality?

Should a video that's around3X3 inches and run exactly 1 minute be 14 megs?

That seems rather high to me. I'm sure I can get better quality than that, I just have not found the right program.

It also depends on the codec you're using - divx, Xvid, avi, mpeg-4 etc.

Try different types and see what gets the best result for your clip. I don't do a whole lot of video encoding so I'm fairly useless at recommending a program.

I think it's avi, but it says it's a winamp media file.

How would I switch the codec? I don't think that's an option on my camera.

If Winamp is set as the default player for that file type, it'll tell you it's a Winamp media file.

If you go to Folder Options -> View, you can uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" to see what file type it is.

It's still says winamp under properties, but the file name has ".avi" after it.

Don't know if anyone's mentioned this elsewhere, but check out Zamzar.

Is there a good freeware program that can play DVDs? I can't seem to watch The Unit on Windows Media Player without getting a lot of jerkiness.

Dink Smallwood by RTsoft

Well, here's my contribution to the list. Sure, the game's old, but it's free, entertaining and funny as hell. Also, it comes with an editor for all the wannabe game programmers out there, and there are tons of user-created mods out there.

Basically, it's a classic isometric RPG... with poo... It's just plain funny. I haven't played this game in a couple of years, but just thinking about it, I'm gonna give it a good playthrough.

Maybe not a must-have, but if you've got anything that's reluctant to uninstall properly, Revo Uninstaller might be worth a try.

Didn't see PC Decrapifier mentioned, it's good for clearing bundled randomness from newly bought PCs

Firefox extensions that are good IMO;  CustomizeGoogle, Copy All Urls, Fasterfox, Image Zoom, Download Statusbar, UnPlug, NoScript.

Here's the list of programs I use (in order from top to bottom) to make animated .gifs like this one.  This is a good resource for all aspiring .gif-makers out there who lack the funding (or are just too cheap, like myself) to spring for high-end image editing software.  All of these programs are freeware and the links, if they aren't broken by the time you read this, should all point to where you can download the software.  The only exception is GIMP 2, which doesn't seem to want to load right now, but just good search it and you should be fine.

DownloadHelper Firefox Extension - Saving FLVs from video-sharing websites
Riva FLV Encoder - Converts FLV to MPEG
VirtualDubMod - Saves MPEG frames as single .PNG files
GIMP 2 - Editing frames/layers as needed
Easy Graphic Converter 1.2 - Converts a list of .PNG files to .GIF
UnFREEz - Stacks .GIFs in a specified order to save as an animation

As far as how each program works precisely, well, you'll need to do a little poking around in each one to get it to do what you want.  It's not hard, but don't give up too quickly.  If you have any questions you can PM me and I'll do what I can to help.

Another good program for making animated gifs from flv files is SWF Toolbox. It can take frames from flv files and turn them all into individual gifs to use with unfreez. It can even make animated gifs directly from a flv file as long as it's short.

The only problem is the freeware version leaves a watermark. However, if you're looking to make something short it's easy to edit out the mark on the individual frames using photoshop or even ms paint.

FileDisk ISO Mounter

This is a really cool and easy to use ISO mounting tool.  After you install the program it adds a "Mount via Filedsk" option to your right-click menu.  So all you do is right-click on an ISO file, choose "Mount via Filesdisk", tell it the drive letter you want and you are done.

Works with CD and DVD ISOs.

In terms of development, there's a couple of popular open source IDE (integrated development environment) solutions out there that are pretty decent.  There's Eclipse which was originally an IBM made solution, which has a ton of modules for C/C++, Perl, PHP, Ruby, and the ubiquitous Java (perhaps others, but I don't develop in them).  Additionally, there's Netbeans which is newer than eclipse, but is gradually getting the Sun IDE functionality ported to it (C/C++, PHP, Ruby and Java thus far - no Perl yet).  For database, PostgreSQL has a lot of the functionality of oracle with none of the cost.  Additionally, if you're interested in PostgreSQL, but want some more handy stuff bundled in, EnterpriseDB offers a version called "PostgreSQL Plus" with a bunch of utilities.

I didn't see it mentioned, but for video viewing on windows, I find MPlayer to be good (Linux too).  VLC is okay, but with XP x64 edition, it will hard lock your machine when you watch some avi files with it.

Information Security:
Comodo was the best rated the last time I checked, it's free and that was even comparing it to Norton, etc.

If you're looking into playing around with a new operating system, VMWare Player coupled with the vast number of appliances they've got (Linux, BSD, Nexenta GNU/Solaris) will give you a good opportunity to try them without reformatting a machine.

Lastly, if you're into usenet, GrabIt is a pretty good bin downloader.

RealTemp

After trying roughly a dozen programs, this is the only one that accurately reports my CPU temps.  I have an E8400 that is notorious for having wonky sensors that most programs report are running about 8-10 degrees higher than they really are, and RealTemp picks up the right temps.  I think it's Intel only right now.
