I recently stumbled upon FastStone Capture, which really made my head explode.

It's the screen capture program that does anything you can think of, including capturing a scroll page. You have the option to edit your capture right away, bluring some sensitive parts, adding comments, arrows, highlights, and then directly attach to a new mail, or send to the printer, etc... It is incredibly handy.

Bad news is that the last two versions are no longer free. The last free version is 5.3, but if you look at the change log you'll see that you don't lose a lot of awesomeness by sticking to this version. That said, I'm seriously considering buying the stuff (it's a lifetime cross version licence), for 20$ it's more than worth it.

Here's their website : http://www.faststone.org/

To download the last free version, here's some links. Or try googling "FastStone Capture 5.3" :
http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=775
(I don't know this website, so be cautious. I downloaded my copy from a french website)

You might also like their image viewer, the accurately named Fastone Image Viewer, which is free.

Here are just a few of my favorites:

1. Kill Process (http://orangelampsoftware.com/products_killprocess.php): this program lets you kill just about ANY process running on your computer and even lets you kill multiple processes at the same time via customizable "Kill Lists". Great for when you need to shut something down and Task Manager tells you that it can't do it.  Few and far between are the processes that this thing hasn't been able to kill for me.

2. CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/): CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system, clears your IE/Firefox history and temporary internet files, and cleans and optimizes your registry.  It literally takes seconds to run an analysis and about the same to clean the junk up.

3. ReNamer (http://www.den4b.com/downloads.php?project=ReNamer): This thing is the greatest mass file renaming tool I have ever seen. You select the files you want to rename, then add rules one at a time (for instance, "Insert "." at position three" or "Replace all "_" with spaces"), click rename and you're done.  When I finally decided on a set format for my .mp3 collection it only took me a few hours to rename all 5000+ files in my collection.  It also edits IDv3 tags.

4. TweakUI http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui: Don't know if this counts or not but this is a program released by Microsoft, although not officially supported, that allows you to make changes to the Windows interface without having to much around in the registry.  I'd list some examples of what it does but there are WAY too many things for me to list here...it's mainly to remedy some of the annoyances that run rampant in Windows.

I'm sure I've got some more to list so I'll try to follow up later.

For the dude who needs to type in a foreign language but doesn't have a foreign language keyboard:

Just a basic little program that runs in the background and basically macros foreign characters for you. Very intuitive.

Would anyone happen to know of a good FREE Registry Cleaner? It seems that every one I download will make me purchase the full program before it will actually fix all of my errors.

Two posts above yours. I use it all the time, and I can vouch for it. Be warned, though, that any registry cleaner has the possibility to royally screw up your system. However I've never ran into that problem with CCleaner.

a.viary.com has a bunch of free web-based applications. At least it will, it's still in beta, so the only available tools right now are Phoenix, which is an image editor, Toucan, which is a color swatch/palette generator, Raven, a vector editor, and Peacock, which is a "visual laboratory". You can try to get a beta invite if you're interested. If you don't get it but are still interested, PM me for an invite. I've only got 5 invites though.

There are also tools like music generators and editors, known as Roc and Myna, and Rookery, which is kind of an online marketplace. When everything is finally released, you will in effect be able to make your own music, create album art for it, and sell the music on Rookery, all for free.

http://kayin.pyoko.org/iwbtg/ is host to a freeware game called I Wanna Be The Guy, which could easily be considered the hardest videogame in all of history. Ever. I'll let the game's explanation speak for itself:

Quote
I Wanna Be The Guy: The Movie: The Game is a sardonic loveletter to the halcyon days of early American videogaming, packaged as a nail-rippingly difficult platform adventure. Players fill the role of The Kid, a youthful, vaguely Megaman-esque protagonist on a quest to become The Guy. This inscrutable plot, however, is just a vehicle for a wide variety of inventive, well-designed and frustrating jump-and-shoot challenges that pay homage to many of the games you loved as a child. The ever-fragile Kid explodes in a shower of red pixels at the slightest brush from the game's many obstacles, from traditional spikes and bottomless pits to more unconventional killers, such as plantlife and puzzle pieces.

Using a multiroute layout not unlike a Metroidvania, the game grants a degree of deadly exploration, without those extraneous upgades meant to make life easier. The game provides players with a choice in terms of their deathrate, thanks to a variable difficulty setting that changes the number of save points from frequent to nonexistent. IWBTG is open to all players; knowledge of videogaming history is optional, and may not help against the frequently ironic and always sadistic deathtraps located herein. And so, the question is left up to you...

Do YOU have what it takes to be The Guy?

Clonezilla is this really cool program that uses debian and a bunch of other stuff to let you make an image of your computer. You just download this, put it on a CD or flash drive, boot from it, and it'll let you clone your computer and put the image wherever you want. It also works as a mass cloning tool but I didn't test that out. It worked great once for me and isn't working on another computer but I'm still impressed.

A link on Digg directed me to a web browser called Minefield.  The primary draw for this browser, for me, was speed because I'm on a connection that slows way down once in a while.  Minefield is by Mozilla and is based on beta code that's going to be used in Firefox in the future.  It's billed as the fastest browser in the world, testing up to 10% faster than Google Chrome.  I can vouch for the fact that switching from Firefox 2 to Minefield I noticed a huge drop in loading times for web pages.

Obviously with any software still in testing there's some drawbacks.  When I installed it it installed over top of my Firefox 2 despite saying specifically that it would not, so now when I try to open Firefox it opens Minefield instead.  Another con is that very few of the add-ons I used with Firefox work with Minefield, despite it supporting a good percentage of them.  The add-ons I use that work are Download Accelerator Plus Integration and Download Statusbar.  That's 2 out of 10 add-ons that work, even after Minefield checked for add-on updates, and they're fairly non-essential.  Also Minefield uses the Firefox 3 theme which I wasn't a huge fan of.  When I tried to download the Firefox 2 theme to it I got a message saying it was incompatible.  So far those are the only concerns I've had, though.

Here's the add-ons I have that DON'T work, in case you're using one of them but want to try Minefield.

- Cooliris
- Download Embedded
- Flashblock
- Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer
- Greasemonkey
- IE Tab
- SwiftTabs
- UnPlug

There may be other add-ons out there that will give you similar functionality, but I haven't tested them out so I couldn't tell you for sure what works and what doesn't.

Is it fair to suggest freeware Operating Systems? I mean, if it's free and legal you're after, it's tough to beat a Linux/BSD system. Generally absolutely everything on there will be FOSS with a scant few proprietary things (codecs, Flash).

VSO DIVXtoDVD - Another one click DIVX to DVD package, I use this software when a frame rates don't need to be converted.  For some reason the frame rate conversion method used by DIVXtoDVD would cause burned DVDs to pause in my particular player, although I could find no evidence of other people having issues.  It also has its own built-in DIVX-->MPG encoder

This fella ain't free. I can run the free version but it watermarks all video unless you cough up 40USD.

I'm in that boat as well.  Looking for a free converter from avi to dvd.  any suggestions?

For shame, nobody's posted Daemon Tools yet?

It's basically virtual drive software, which allows you to mount .iso files from your hard drive and have your computer treat it like a DVD/CD.  It's a very handy piece of software for when you either backup your software (coupling it with an image ripping program like Alcohol) or just don't want to have a CD in the drive.

There's a General Freeware and a Must-Have Freeware Thread.  Daemon Tools is an extremely useful program but I don't really think it's a must-have.
