excuse me sir, but what is amazing on this boat picture ? I'm missing something aren't I ?

I was thinking the same thing.  I had to stare at it for a few minutes to figure it out and then I had one of those "Holy shit!  The boats are going over other boats!" moments.

I remember shuddering whenever i saw a picture like this during History. Imagine if that was you on the boat, knowing where you were going. Terrifying.

A photo which I find absolutely stunning is this.

It is from the GOODS project, in which over the course of a year the Hubble telescope was focused on a single spot for 90 minutes.  The image penetrates about 12 billion light years, which means that since the big bang is thought to have happened 13.7 billion years ago, some of that stuff is nearly from the begginnings of time.
I just find it absolutely stunning that this much is behind everywhere we look.  From one little point in the sky, there is all this.

In my astronomy class we were showed this picture, and it was put into a context which blew my mind.  It was like this:

The image shows approximately the same percentage of the sky as is blocked out from your field of vision by a dime held at arm's length with one eye closed.  Look at all the tiny specks, most of which you can barely see.  There are thousands of them.  Each speck is a galaxy. Not a star, not a solar system. A galaxy.  Each of those specks contains millions, if not billions of stars, each star an average of four light years apart.  And this picture is only a tiny fraction of the whole sky.

Great load of pictures, thought I'd add a few.  Being an air traffic controller I have an unhealthy obsession with planes, so here are a few great pics:

I'm not sure if this is at the end of that canal overpass posted on the other page, but it rocks none the less. I remember seeing a program on TV about it a while back, it's basically a boat lift which works ferris wheel style (the other side is cut off in this picture):

I was going to post that very same picture, Guise!

The picture of that canal overpass is supposedly from Germany. The weird boat lift thing is from somewhere in the North of England I believe.

Central Scotland. It's called the Falkirk wheel and was built as part of the millenium rebuilding of the Forth and Clyde canal (for years it flowed mainly in pipes during the post-industrial years and was re-opened as a tourist attraction and seems to do quiite well). A really interesting piece of engineering. Designed so it weighs almost exactly the same when the carriage thing is full or empty so it takes very little power to turn it.

That's a 4 meter long shark biting a boat. Yeah. It took a chunk out of the metal hydrofoil.

I get to see it in person every year. When it goes off, it feels like someone opened a huge oven door.

Does anyone know where today's Craption Contest picture comes from? The two tramps on the skyscraper? I think that's an amazing photo.

The bland cityscape in the background is the most interesting part of this picture.  Is that morose city Hong Kong?

An Ansel Adams landscape.

Also, this picture was made from plates taken in 1911 (more here). That just blows my mind.

My Dad's place of work was in Hamel Hampstead.  'Was' being the operative word.  Most of it is now billowing about above the skies of London, and the rest just collapsed today under intense heat and pressure.  He just got sent pictures of it collapsing by the company (for some unknown reason, maybe they're trying to deter him from turning up tomorrow) - I would scan them in but I don't have a scanner.  A shame because they are amazing photos, which is the title of this thread.

Here are some more pictures of it though - the biggest such event in peacetime Europe:

OH NOES!
