I've actually been to that exact spring. My community college has that same photograph in our humanities building. I always stop and look at it whenever I walk by it.

A NASA observatory has captured what appears to be the hand of God (or Dr. Manhattan) reaching to smite a red chasm in space (hell?).

The gigapixel skyline.

You can almost tell what some of the people in the buildings are watching on TV. Amazing.

Dreaming of the Tiger Spring in Hangzhou.

Photos of relics from ancient history fascinate me as they reflect a time period of humankind before any one human alive today even existed and all of the problems and solutions we have today weren't around, so they had different approaches to different problems and solutions.

This picture perfectly captures that spirit for me.

Severe infestation of the kudzu plant affecting an entire forest clearing and surrounding trees.  This is what can happen when a foreign species is imported without giving any thought to the damage it can cause.

I opened that link and just randomly clicked around zooming in.  The very first thing it zoomed to was this.

This is a panoramic view I took of the escarpment leading to Kinglake West that was the source of the fire that threatened them from the South (they simultaneously were threatened by a fire approaching from the West) in the recent bushfires in Australia.  Everyone in the house depicted survived because they evacuated early.

The space shuttle Atlantis and the Hubble Space Telescope pass in front of the sun during the recent repair mission.  Sadly, you can't zoom in to look at astronauts in their underwear.

This was the First thing in the gigapixel Picture i clicked on, and the irony almost killed me.
look at the name of the boat.

but this is really why i posted, this picture is of the victims of a cholera outbreak in France during the 18th century. they ran out of places to put the bodies so they just threw them in the ancient roman quarries that ran beneath the city. I'm not sure how the bones got stacked or what the signs say so if anyone has more info on that it would be appreciated.

That's... not really what it is at all. Both those pictures are from the Catacombs of Paris, created to accept all the remains from all the condemned cemeteries in the center of the city. They did that because those were filling up and causing all sorts of problems to their surroundings, like diseases and soil contamination, so they just opened up larger cemeteries on the suburbs of Paris (like the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery, where Jim Morrisson is buried) and banned them inside the city proper. They took all the bones and remains from those closed off cemeteries and arranged them in ossuaries as a tourist attraction.

This is quite an amazing picture of a wall of the ossuary, with the inscription showing the original cemetery which the bones came from and the date they were brought there.

The photo you linked says, roughly translated, "Remains from the graveyard of Saint-Etienne-of-the-Sandstones, deposited here on may, 1787"

The one I linked says kind of the same thing, but it gives the address of the original cemetery and says the bones went someplace else before being arranged inside the catacombs.
