This picture was taken in 2004, where a team of Japanese scientists hung a lure deep down, along with a camera taking pictures at random intervals, with the aim of photographing a Giant Squid, which had up until then never been seen alive. This one was only seven metres long, yet I still find it incredibly exciting to see this near-legendary creature reach out and seize the bait like that. At the same time, I find it kind of frightening to see this thing rushing out of the gloom. There's something scary and kind of ominous even initially looking at the image, and the graininess and obscurity of the picture makes it seem more real.

There's another pic of the same animal as it struggles on the end of the wire. One thing the image revealed was the Giant Squid's hunting habits. A lot of the creatures in the ocean depths just hang around wasting no energy, waiting for food to drift by so they can snatch it and devour it. The Giant Squid that the scientists saw rushed at the bait and enveloped it in its tentacles, indicating that it is an aggressive hunter.

Here's a small gallery of some of the things they saw. As well as the images of the squid itself, there's also pictures of the tentacle the animal left behind when it broke free of the wire.  Apparently, despite the fact that it had been severed, it still flailed around and grabbed hold of the scientists with its suckers for a while.

On a similar note:

A Great White shark breaches the water after it attacked a decoy target off the coast of South Africa. The sheer power behind the animal is glorious and a little frightening.

The first three pictures in this gallery are satellite photos of the inauguration. Fox News has a really really large version here.

A photo album of pictures taken by SS officers at Auschwitz.

For some reason I hate the Nazi's even more when I see pictures like this showing they were just people. Not cartoon mustache twirling villains. Just men and women. Laughing and taking pictures, and executing thousands of people.

Abandoned housing development in Rio Vista, CA.

Story.
The developer was planning to build 855 "upscale" homes here, but has abandoned the whole thing due to the economic downturn.  The buildings in the middle are the model homes.

Here is a 1,474 megapixel photo of Obama's inauguration including most of the two million people in attendance.  It's a Flash application, it starts out fully zoomed out and you can zoom in and move it around to focus on every part.

Chinese lantern festival, which is pretty cool, but then they set an empty skyscraper on fire, and it becomes super awesome.

The first six pictures here show, frame-by-frame, a suicide bomb going off amidst a crowd in Sri Lanka.  It's happening so fast that the expressions on the people's faces don't change even as the fireball engulfs them.
