This pic was literally luck...back then, pictures were taken minutes apart ( versus miliseconds today ).    This pic was timed perfectly when Ali swung his arm.  If you watch the video of it, his arm swings back and forth so quickly, it's hard to imagine the timing of the picture.

In the '70s, I had a Nikon F-series camera that, with motor back, could shoot three frames a second, bracketed for f-stop or exposure.

I've always been quite amazed by this thread. For some odd reason, pictures of space invoke a feeling of awe in me, seeing how much is out there, how much is unexplored. The picture of cancer creeping into your cells, just before it starts it's life wrecking purpose.  I'll admit, some of these pictures have brought a tear to my eye. I'm weird, I know.

My poor contribution, of the Lagoon Nebula:

I really like pictures that reflect either history or the world around us. Here's one of my favorites, although a sad one:

Sudanese Child Being Stalked By Vulture

The photograph was taken by Kevin Carter. The fate of the girl is unknown.  Carter was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the picture, but took his life only a few months later.

Photos of "Benjamin", the last known living thylacine, or, tasmanian tiger/wolf:

I'm fascinated by extinct animals. I guess there's just a certain charm about animals we once had around, so recently, and are now gone forever. Its nice to hope sometimes that just maybe somewhere out there in the wild there are relict populations of animals like these (there are still regular reported sightings of thylacines in Tasmania), or others like the stellers sea cow (of which there are also sporadic, unconfirmed sightings). Alas.

I know that there's bound to be several pictures of nebulas and other stellar objects here but this one is worth mentioning.
This, along with pictures of distant galaxies, dying and forming stars, and other things that occupy this universe, fill me with a sense of awe. I wonder how can such beautiful things can exist outside mans imagination, how the colors and shapes of these floating pieces of art can be so perfect. It is with these thoughts that another feeling comes into play: sadness. While these things are incredibly beautiful, I will never see them with my own eyes. Yet I still look up though, always admiring the beauty and mystery of the infinite heavens.

Before their extinction due to over-hunting, these birds would fly in flocks that would be a mile wide, up to 300 miles long, contain almost a billion birds and take days to pass over a spot. Days. Just fucking imagine that. The estimate is that there were up to 5 billion of them in the continent before the Europeans arrived.

Water drops on a pussy willow in front of a bleeding hearts flower. I love the flares and distorted flowers in the drops, so small and so complex.

Some great photos of a large bull elk swimming in Lake Coeur d' Alene, northern Idaho.  Taken by a friend of mine.  He was pretty excited about these.

The earth from 200 miles up.

For a couple reasons I wouldn't mind having a great big pile of money.  I would happily spend quite a lot of that pile if I could see this with my own eyes.

How have these not been posted yet?

They're older than the internet.

Sorry for the double post, and sorry about the lack of spacing.

These are chalk drawings done by a guy named Julian Beever. Viewed from the wrong angle, they're very distorted looking, as he has to seriously compensate for perspective.

I've got a couple:

http://www.lib.fit.edu/pubs/librarydisplays/colors/603px-Crab_Nebula.jpg
The Crab Nebula. The neutron star in the center of the nebula now spins at 30 times a second. When the star went supernova in 1054 it was bright enough to be seen in the daytime.

http://an-m.net/eagle_nebula.jpeg
The Eagle Nebula. Those finger-looking things are a couple of thousand light years long. It's essentially a star-making factory.

I would also like to correct myself: The lightning is actually being cause by the volcano, which I think is much cooler than my previous statement.

Hey, those are from a volcano erupting close to my city. We get those images all the time on the news and we're getting a lot of refugees in my city. The images are incredible, but the stories behind them are horrible.

This is a photo of the San Francisco bay, taken by the Golden Gate Bridge.  It's far too big to fit all on the monitor, but when viewed full size its beautiful.  I've always wished I had a greater knowledge of photography(besides how to use the camera on my phone).
