I have no idea what this is, a nebula or galaxy. I don't even know what nebula means.

Possibly a close-up or it may be something completely different.

They appear to be both the same thing.. and that thing appears to be a super nova.

It's called "The Cat's Eye Nebula."  And you're partially right in that it is a dying star that has gone nova or supernova.  It's one of my favorite Hubble pictures.

Here's a very high resolution picture of the Earth.  Odd that when I see the edges and the faint blue glow of the atmosphere, it makes me a little dizzy.

That's no moon...it's a space station.

But seriously, that is amazing.  I'm glad that people are choosing to use such technology for good.

There's a really cool NASA video on Mars here.

If you REALLY want to quote Star Wars, go with this one:

That's Mimas, another of Saturns moons.

In 1918, 18,000 US Army officers and soldiers stood in the 105-degree desert heat to make a human statue of liberty:

http://www.snopes.com/photos/patriotic/liberty.asp#photo

Read the accompanying text, too--the technology for aerial photography didn't exist, so the photo was taken from a high tower, meaning the design of the "statue" had to be distorted to account for perspective. There are more men in the torch alone than in the entire rest of the statue.

I got these in an email today, supposedly showing the stormclouds during Katrina. Though I'll gladly be proven wrong, they look more like individual storms.

This guy is a pretty cool artist; he kinda came back into vogue after having to do the crappiest jobs for a while. This picture is fantastic, especially when you see it in person.

This is a photo of a soldier rushing a wounded Iraqi girl to an American hospital. A group of children had been crowding around their patrol when it was attacked by a car bomb. It is a very powerful image for me, the stark contrast of compassion amidst indiscriminate brutality. Every time I look at it evokes a lot of different emotions, and the print of it I own is one of my few possessions I give damn about.

The story behind it can be found here: http://www.michaelyon-online.com/wp/little-girl.htm/

Here an amazing photo of a fire tornado.

And on this site you can find several galleries of incredible pictures of nature and its phenomena such as lightning, tornadoes, storms or clouds.Unfortunately the pictures aren't very large but impressive.

Photos from 1900-1950 from The Library of Congress

A lot of them are a weird combination of seemingly-documentary but (maybe) heavily stylised. The ones of people working, nobody looks at the camera, everybody's busy... but the light hits their face just perfect, or a shirt has the same pattern as a part of the machine the people are working on.

While I'm not entirely certain on this (and the page that's supposed to help, doesn't) very few of them have copyright restrictions attached to them, so if you want some printed it might be okay to go ahead with it. The resolution'll make them pretty small, but if anyone more canny with the law can confirm what all the jingo on copyright says, there's some I would sincerely love to have up on a wall somewhere.

Here are some cool objects made with a 3D printer.

Yeah, the aircraft factory ones were clearly meant to be part of the wartime morale-boosting effort.  In addition to the cool photos (hundreds there!), the captions for the female workers are priceless.  In 1942 terms, saying a woman could be carefully trained to do quality work was seriously progressive.

This pic was literally luck...back then, pictures were taken minutes apart ( versus miliseconds today ).    This pic was timed perfectly when Ali swung his arm.  If you watch the video of it, his arm swings back and forth so quickly, it's hard to imagine the timing of the picture.

This year's World Press Photo winners have been anounced.

As every year, there are some terrific and haunting pictures in there, and as every year, there's unfortunately a whole lot from war zones and other places of human misery.
