I'm co-hosting an 80's radio show in forty-nine minutes, and was unfortunately born in the nineties.

I was wondering what 80's songs you like to listen to, and wish to be enlightened.

Oh, and you can listen to our show at www.krcl.org in forty-eight minutes. So you know, do that if you please.

Also, I searched for this and didn't find anything so if it's out there I will kindly shut the fuck up.

Since the show has already happened and had the best joke EVER in it, this is now a general 80s music thread.

Play some music by the Cure! Like "Just Like Heaven" or "Let's Go to Bed". They've got a lot of great tracks from the '80s!

The Pixies! Here are my suggestions, accompanied by trivia for you to read out, should you need to.

From Surfa Rosa (1988), there are only two songs that I'd recommend for playing on the radio -

"Gigantic", is probably their most radio-friendly song. It was their first single, and the only track that Kim Deal (who other band member, Black Francis loathed) actually contributed to. It's sweet, and almost instantly likable.

"Where is my Mind", is a track Black Francis wrote about his time diving in the Carribean - a time when all of his troubles and woes faded away. The song sort of implies that whenever he is facing hardship, his mind drifts back off to that time. Where is my mind is actaully most popular from the credits of the Fight Club movie. It's a memorable moment in cinema seeing all of the credit card towers explode, and then the transition to this song.

You might want to note that the Pixies were almost the sole musical influence for Kurt Cobain's Nirvana, and thus a whole genre and generation of angsty kids.

I have more.

Fight for your Right to Party, by the Beastie Boys: Off their album, Licensed to Ill (1986). The Beastie Boys were a Hip-Hop duo, but this song is very punk/rock. They originally made it as a joke song, but the crowd of drunken college 20-something students started getting into it - not realizing it was supposed to be a parody of them, and the Beastie Boys went with it.

Love Will Tear us Apart, by Joy Division: Off their album, Substance (1980). Joy Division - from Manchester, England - are brilliant. They're technically a 70's band, but this one was released in 1980, and this is their most commercial song. Had Ian Curtis not hung himself shortly after this was released, the band would probably have gone on to do amazing things.

Personal Jesus, by Depeche Mode: Released in 1989. I don't know much about Depeche Mode, but this song is great.

Shit, almost forgot Run DMC.

Tougher than Leather has one of the greatest intros to any rap song ever.
Tricky and My Adidas are two of their biggest hits.

What difference does that make?

Grandmaster Flash And The Furious 5 - The Message

Men Without Hats - Safety Dance

Guns N' Roses - Mr. Brownstone

LL Cool J - Rock the Bells

Blondie - The Tide is High

Tommy Tutone - 867 5309

The Cars - You might think

Gary Numan - Cars

Talking Heads - And She Was

That should be more than enough for a radio show.

When do you start playing the eighties music?  If I'm not mistaken, this is your playlist and you haven't played any so far.

The show has already ended. That's the one after it. Meirmeirlizpie really needs to start a joke recommendation thread to get ideas for what to say when the CDs screw up.

I messed up that joke. I'm terrible.

Anyway, that's the playlist for the show after ours. This is our playlist. The Ladybug Lounge with Liz the Ladybug. She's quite soulful.

The computer I was going to play everything off of had a seizure or something, so that didn't work. We had to use some old Cd's.

The show went very well except for the CD stopping out of fucking no where, and I made a really really shitty joke.

Thanks for listening Nicol! I owe you a new kitten.

For some reason the board is showing me timestamps as an hour later than they should be.  Your original post shows as "10:12" for me when apparently it should show as "9:12", hence the confusion.  I can tell time, I promise.

Having the same name as Liz the Ladybug has led to many strange phone calerls telling me 'No, we totally met. What's wrong with you?' and me feeling really bad, until I realize I'm just retarded and so is the one on the other side of the phone.

I personally thought the joke was a brilliant moment in the show.  Mostly because the music died down, the joke was told and then the Seagulls came right back on afterwards.

It was like an act break between verses.

The joke was supposed to be:

Q: What do a rabbit and a grape have in common?
A: They're both purple except for the rabbit.

I'm not quite sure if I told it wrong, but while I was driving home whilst getting taco salad all over my dress because I am a really shitty driver, I realized I probably said:

Q: What's the difference between a grape and a rabbit?
A: They're both purple except for the rabbit.

Which is retarded, and was followed by something like, "Oh and, um, you can call us if you want. Oh, okay neat the song is working."

Billy Idol - White Wedding (or Rebel Yell, both are good)
Beds are Burning - Midnight Oil
King of Wishful Thinking - Go West
How Soon is Now? - The Smiths
I'll Stop the World - Modern English
Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode
Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran
Freedom - George Michael (technically from 1990, but meh)
She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals
China Girl - David Bowie (probably about a dozen other Bowie songs worth playing)
Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles
Purple Rain - Prince
Everybody Have Fun Tonight - Wang Chung
I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) - The Proclaimers
Let's Go - The Cars (from 1979, but very New Wave)
I'll Stand By You - The Pretenders
Don't Stop Believin' - Journey

You don't wanna tilt your program too heavily to one band, but there are probably 5-6 Cure songs that are good enough to warrant air time. Just Like Heaven, Boys Don't Cry, Pictures of You, Close to You, and Love Song immediately come to mind (and I may have missed some other singles).

I picked out mostly new wave and pop stuff. There's a whole shitload of good rock from the 80's, but I'm not exactly sure what your format is (so I went middle of the road).
