I'd like to see a movie about Eugenics.

You might be interested in The New Mankind.  Haven't seen it myself but I understand it's a Swedish film about the compulsory-sterilization program in that country during the thirties, forties and fifties.

Mr Gale mentioned Only Forward.  I'd like to see a version another Michael Marshall Smith novel, "Spares".  I have no idea if it's even filmable.  "The Island" ripped off some of the less exotic parts of the plot but I'd rather not talk about that.

Though I kind of hopped around in the series, Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality books could make for some cool movies.

Interesting take on the concepts of Good, Evil, Nature, Death, War, etc as being offices held by different individuals as time goes along.  Each book is about a different Incarnation with a story that's self inclusive, but they all intertwine into an overarching plot that wraps up in the final one about the Incarnation of Good.  There's ample room for some great special effects as well as a load of different philosophical themes to hit along the way.

I'd love to see Transmetropolitan reach the screen, but it would probably be best as a cable TV series (HBO probably)

I'd rather have Anansi Boys hit the screen than American Gods. I read it first, and I think it was better. Of course, it would make more sense if made after American Gods, maybe...

I'd really love to see a good adaptation of Oryx and Crake, by Atwood. I heard she's writing it into a trilogy now.

I think it would be awesome to see Guillermo del Toro's vision of the Dresden Files (books not TV show) from Jim Butcher.

Given a good budget, I think it would make for some awesomely entertaining movies.

I know that The Hobbit is already in the works, but I would love to see The Silmarillion somehow adapted into a movie.  I really don't know how it could be done, considering it covers such a vast amount of material, but it would be great to see some of those stories come to life.  I think any of Tolkien's remaining works put on the big screen would be amazing.

Another movie announcement also got me thinking.  Cowboy Bebop is getting some live action treatment, and there are a couple other animes I would love to see done this way.  Trigun would be especially interesting simply because of the depth of the story and characters.  And Inuyasha for the same reason.  Both series, as well as Bebop have a vast amount of plot and character development.  And it would be interesting to see who they could get to play the roles.

I know there were some other things I had clanging around in my head, but I can't seem to recall anything else.

I know Rockstar Games has issued a statement expressing their rejection of the idea (at least as of now), but I would love to see a Grand Theft Auto movie get made. I'm a big fan of crime films in general, and I think the potential behind this project is huge; you've got the conventions of the genre, but it's a video-game adaptation, so you've got the freedom to go completely over-the-top with every element. I'd cast Sam Worthington as Niko (I know the nationality is wrong, but I think he could pull it off), set it in Liberty City, and create an original plot-line that could incorporate several iconic characters from the franchise. William Monahan would write it, Zack Snyder would direct (remember, I'm thinking an over-the-top, heavily stylized aesthetic), and it would be at least two and a half hours long.

Also, a biopic of Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski starring Russell Crowe or James Gandolfini would be interesting. He's been mentioned in an article on this site, and I think it'd be an intriguing character study.

Ah you beat me to it!  Transmetropolitan really needs a screen treatment, big screen or small.  Just to get a character like Spider on the screen would be amazing.  How many stories have a drug addicted, foul mouthed, violent, sociopath as the hero?  And he never goes soft throughout the series, that's the beauty of it.

Personally if we're talking Gaiman I'd like to see Neverwhere get done right.  The BBC mini-series had a pitch perfect actor for the Marquis de Carabas but everything else ranged from alright to shoddy.  I'd love to see the book version (done by Gaiman after the mini-series failed to live up to his expectations) done properly as a either a new mini-series or a film.

Really? I've read the first four books and nothing about them really seemed like they'd be a fit for del Toro's unique visual style.

Although I 100% agree with you that there needs to be a large-screen treatment of the part where Harry rides a dinosaur through the horde of zombies. THAT I would pay to see.

I'd like to see Irvine Welsh's Marabou Stork Nightmares adapted into a movie. But, like so many other people here, I'm not quite sure if it could be done right.

I'd also like to see an animated movie based off the game Eternal Sonata, because while the game itself wasn't particularly impressive the storyline (and music) were both superb.

A big historical war movie set during WW1. Hasnt been a movie that really touches on the subject since Gallipoli, which is weird, saving private ryan was pretty much built on the "war is hell, moral ambiguity between common soldiers" things is best personified in WW1.

The closest thing I can think of in recent years is Joyeux Noël.

Yeah, I mean big though, with a budget to actually show the battles and a big audience. Its weird its never done.

Also, funny you should mention a movie about the truce, conversation we had earlier in irc

Quote
Tiiim   lot of people say how it is the best/most touching depicting of WWI ever
Tiiim   that sounds pretty lame, but what else has there been?
MrGale   Just the oz film really
MrGale   nobody gives a shit about ww1
MrGale   not enough americans in it for a movie
MrGale   i still maintain a gallipoli like movie would be a hit, everything that made saving private ryan so critically wanked over is in ww1 much more than ww2
MrGale   i will make a movie
MrGale   it will end with the football game
MrGale   cut up with flashes of them dying and killing each other
MrGale   it will win oscars
Tiiim   it's a shame the football game is only in the first year
Tiiim   it would be nice to have an epic of war with lot of people dying and then in the last scene there is a football game with all the dead soliders
Tiiim   soldiers
MrGale   hmm, you have a point
MrGale   maybe we can start with the somme and all our characters dying or about to die
MrGale   then flash back to recruitment and the start of the war, the training and end on the football game, but then flash back to them dead at the somme
MrGale   that will work
MrGale   like private ryan, start with the big battle
MrGale   we need a villainous officer and a noble one, so we have the clash of attitudes
MrGale   the villainous one doesnt die, he is like a melchett
fermun   have it include americans who signed on with another country's military so that people will care about it.
MrGale   yeah, but they will deride america and its cowardice, and stare into the camera while they do it
MrGale   also, the british dudes should spare a german and let him go back to his side of the trenches, and after the credits you see him getting back and the officer is all "velcome back, herr HITLER"
fermun   it has long been my opinion that world war 2 was all the fault of the british.
fermun   as such, i approve

That would be pretty cool.

At the mountains of madness.

I have no mouth and I must scream.

And a decent adaptation for Crime and Punishment would be great. With Norton as Raskolnikov.

I'm think the events of the later books would really only be possible with someone like del Toro. Also I'm confused how you have only read the first 4 books, but quote an event that occurred in book 7. I think you may have gotten the order wrong.

That may actually be what prevents it from hitting any screen...can you think of anyone who could play Spider? I mean, I can't. Yes, the character is all that you said, but he's more than that. He's truly dedicated to truth and justice, though he goes about it in ways that are not viewed as "noble." It would be hard to truly portray someone like that. The best actor I can think of for that role is Colin Ferrel, and even he couldn't do the character justice, I think (I use him because he has shown plenty of versatility. Between his troubled hitman in In Bruges and Bullseye in Daredevil he's shown that he can play both a psycho and a man with a conscience well, and bring humour and charm to his characters. If he do all that at once, then he might be a passable Spider Jerusalem. Plus, when he's bald-headed, he almost looks the part).

I second Crime and Punishment. That's a true classic. I'd also like to see a full length version of Animal Farm, but I don't know if it would turn out well, if it was attempted.

Theres been a couple of full length versions of Animal Farm made.

Including a wacky 50s one, funded by the CIA and inexplicably including a happy ending where the animals revolt again (against the pigs) and this time everything works out ok.

I'd like to see an adaptation of Rage, a novella Stephen King wrote under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. With Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Charles Decker.

This is Tim Roth in the movie Made in Britain.

Back on the point of the thread, though, Transmetropolitan needs a big screen adaptation as much as a dog needs a hat. Sure, it's completely unnecesary but holy fuck, I want to see that happen. The main issue I see with it is the risk of getting this.

I don't think Colin has the chops to play Spider, but Johnny Depp does. Playing Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas   is just a warm-up for the Spider role.

You guys are right. I'm thinking if Johnny Depp signs on for the lead role, a Transmetropolitan movie or cable series would be the best thing ever.
