What are some of your favorite Video Game soundtracks?

I'm going to choose Animal Crossing. The minimalist style matches up perfectly with the aimless game play, or if you just want to listen to it and take time to chill that works great as well. Possibly my favorite soundtrack.

Ikaruga and God Of War 2 have my favourite soundtracks.  Super Mario Galaxy, the Starfox games, Zelda: Majora's Mask and Advent Rising are also pretty awesome off the top of my head.  And Shadow Of The Colossus as well; I like just about anything big and orchestral like that.

Also Guitar Hero 2.

Final Fantsy Tactics, Masaharu Iwata and Hitoshi Sakim did a great job at capturing hte mood of the game and every boss battle was made even more epic with their styling of the music

The soundtrack to the 1999 computer game Outcast was rather impressive. Performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, it's one of the most cinematic soundtracks I've heard in a game.

Heroes of Might and Magic 4 had an excellent soundtrack if you like fantasy music. I have it in a mix of music that I often listen to when going to sleep.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night has everything you could want in a soundtrack. Hard Rock, Techno, Symphony, dramatic, action packed, spooky. Any other great soundtrack is almost certainly second to this masterpiece.

Although not technically a video game, Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children has an amazing soundtrack. Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 especially give me happy feelings. Most of the Zelda games have nice tunes. Shadow of the Colossus is grand as well.

One of the best soundtracks ever is the orchestral version of the Chrono Trigger soundtrack.

Guild Wars also has some great soundtracks.

And Final Fantasy 8 had music so good I scoured the internet to find sheet music of it so I could learn to play some of the songs.

Although not technically a video game, Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children has an amazing soundtrack.

Considering Advent Children's soundtrack largely consisted of rearranged and revamped tunes taken straight from the FFVII game, I'd say that counts.

To go way back into the annals of video gaming history, Megaman 2 for the NES is an absolute treat, soundtrack-wise. The complexity and finesse they managed to achieve using only the NES sound chip is astounding. Awesome tunes too. One of those video game music cover bands described it as "'The White Album' of video game music", and that pretty much sums it up for me.

Earthbound and Chrono Trigger for the SNES are terrific as well.

The mood set by the music in Okami caused it to be the first game soundtrack CD I've ever purchased.

I really like any soundtrack that Nintendo makes.  I guess that is why I like Brawl's soundtrack so much because they basically took the best songs out of their already great soundtracks and combined them in one game.

Call of Duty 3 scored by Joel Goldsmith, the son of Jerry Goldsmith.  My favorite track is "Nightdrop," which has a wonderfully British WWII flick feel to it.

People mention FF games but NO ONE mentions FFX? Otherworld is one of my all time favorite tracks and Suteki Da Ne is embarassingly good also.

Tsujioko did an amazing job with the last two Fire Emblem games as well as the two GBA American releases. Each game is littered with dozens of songs fitted perfectly with each situation. The songs mesh together perfectly, songs switch seamlessly between the specific map song to the attack song to the recruitment song. Radiant Dawn had an especially massive soundtrack with several memorable songs, my favorite being "Stalwarts Unite".

Megaman is also one of my all time favorites, I bought Mega Collection just to hear the great techo soundtracks from each game though I'm not a giant Megaman fan.

Finally, Ocarina of Time, which has had the biggest impact as far as music on the series, it had endless awesome tunes that you got to play a section of in the game. The series has always had great music but that game has my all time favorite soundtrack (excluding Brawl for reasons Coolman stated). Saria's Song still gets stuck in my head from time to time.

The entire Total Annihilation soundtrack. Instead of having some techno-rock soundtrack like Command & Conquer, they have an entire orchestra, so when you start launching your tank offensive with air support, it sounds nothing short of epic. Unfortunately, I can't find any sites with streaming audio, so the best I could up with is this guy's Youtube page.

Half-Life 2 and its sequels/episodes. Not only is the music entirely kickass crazy action movie electronica/techno/whatever, it's used better than in any game I've ever seen. Most of the game is silent save for the zombies and bullets and whatever else, but every now and then this crazy heart-pumping music starts blasting. When that happens, you know that shit is about to get crazy.

BioShock's orchestral score and period music helped set the creepy mood in that game better than any other game I've played.

The orchestral score can be downloaded directly from 2K Games' website:

And here's a complete list of music in the game:

do MMORPGs count? I mean it's still technically a video game... Whatever, I have to nominate the Final Fantasy XI soundtrack. specifically Distant Worlds. The entire soundtrack is pretty awesome, but this beautiful piece really made a perfect ending to the best story arc in the game. All of the Final Fantasys have had awesome soundtracks in my opinion, Nobuo Uematsu just does astounding work.
