I recently saw part of some science program on television where a team of astronauts equipped with futuristic technology encountered life on another planet. I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be a realistic computer simulation or completely fictionalized BS (I remember them playing the whole thing off as a simulated space voyage), but they were in the middle of showing "recorded footage" of an encounter with some alien creatures that floated via delicate pouches of gas less dense than the surrounding atmosphere. Maybe one explanation of those floating chunks of rock could be that they're somehow hollow and filled with very light space gas. Or they just look cool. I can't tell.

Perhaps the unobtainium messes with gravity, due to an over-concentration of science.

That's not far off: apparently the planet this movie is set on has a weird gravitational field and magnetic issues and things like that.

That was Discoveries "Alien Planet". Sort of a mix of simulation and BS (here's the first of nine parts).

I first saw the trailer when I went to see District 9.  I was so blown away from the CGI it brought tears to my eyes...  It was like a Final Fantasy game...  And then it went downhill from there.

I'm not too happy with the story so far as it follows everything that today's movies follow.  Find product, natives have big source, bring in big guns and take it away.  Then you have the romance part (bleh), then change of heart, then the battle speech, then the epic pointless battle and then the end.  What happened to movies these days?  It's all action, no plot.  Just over stimulation of pretty colors/graphics and no substance.

I still see influence from Aliens and Terminator.  James Cameron also directed Legend which IMHO was a fantastic movie along with Alien/Aliens.  I just hope when it come out I will be surprised and like the movie as a whole.

But hey, it could've been worse:  Michael Bay could've directed it....

"Legend" was directed by Ridley Scott.  Although it's not hard to confuse the two.  :-)

Oh no....  I'm so sorry.  Big oops on my part.  Ridley Scott also directed Alien but James took over in Aliens right?

The New York Times has an interesting article about, if Avatar Bombs who gets suck with the majority of the bill.

From what I understand in this article, Fox doesn't stand to lose much beyond initial investment in the movie and advertising budget. The biggest loser in all of this wouldn't even be Cameron, it would be Dune Entertainment and Ingenious Media who picked up over 60% of the film. Despite all of this, there is a lot of talk in this article about how Fox is trying to minimize its potential profit loss.

The CG looks good, but not mind shatteringly awesome.
Besides that, there is nothing really positive going for the movie. The story looks super weak, and the allegorical "strong taking from the weak, blah blah blah" is so cliche, top that with the inspirational speech and final battle I just summed up the whole movie and about a hundred others just as non-descript as the last.

+ Michelle Rodriguez is in this movie, and she has been in every stinker you can think of (Bloodrayne or Fast and the Furious, anyone?)

How is it that this film with the most re-hashed story line ever is being touted as the next best thing? Is it purely for its 3D gimmick?

It's being touted by James Cameron as the next best thing because it's his movie and he believes all of his movies are the next best thing.  It's being touted as such by certain media outlets because they have a lot of faith in James Cameron.  More so before the trailer came out.

Also Michelle Rodriguez debuted in Girlfight, an indie film which has 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and was very well received by critics.  Also, while not critically well received, I was under the impression that Resident Evil had a good reputation in the nerd crowd.  She also was in Battle in Seattle which is not my cup of tea but any suckage would come from being preachy and political rather than cheesy and B-movie like.

For some perspective, Australia was once touted as the new Gone With the Wind.

Yeah, and Halo 2 and Lost. God she sucks.

Depending on who you talk to, those aren't exactly marks in the Win column either, y'know.

But in her defense she can play the tough chick pretty well, and it's just not a Jim Cameron movie if there isn't a hot chick with heavy assault weapons.  She's never ruined anything I've seen her in, and I doubt she'll ruin this.  Really, the buck stops with Cameron: he built this movie from the ground up and if it's crap, it really IS his fault.
