For a complete an utter beginner, is it better to learn on an electric or an acoustic? I'd like to be able to play both, eventually, although leaning towards the electric more - which should be my first guitar? Can you learn intricate little classical ditties on an electric? Can you attempt to practice power solos on an acoustic? Obviously they wouldn't sound right, but are the skills and fingering fairly interchangable?

I'm more inclined to tell you to start on an acoustic, seeing as you need an amp to have any effect with an electric (as opposed to an acoustic, which sound grand without any gizmos).

Still, I've got a bias towards acoustic, so filter anything I say through that.

The action on electric guitars tends to be lower, making them less of a strain on the fingers. Bending strings on an acoustic is a grind. Other than that they're pretty much interchangeable up to about the fourteenth fret. If you learn electric style playing on an acoustic your fingers will become stronger than if you do it sensibly and you'll be able to maul the balls off a Jackson.

Chicks dig watching fingerstyle, or the manual dexterity that comes from it?

I think they like the troubadour vibe they get from it. I've yet to meet a lady who enjoys having her labia thrashed like a banjo.

You've obviously misspelled reel women, referring, of course, to the women of our film industry. They like it rough.

I can't stress enough (though it's been mentioned before) how important it is to get a good cable for electric. A bad one can really fuck things up.
