Quick!  What's the best kind of container you know?  If you said anything other than "jars," may I suggest you consider jars?

Latest California wildfire photos.

I like the first flame retardant one and the one halfway down with the fire on the silhouetted hillside.

The Olympics always produce amazing photos but I came across this guy's Bejing portfolio and... well, damn. Some excellent photos across the entire board. But here's a few of the ones that I found amazing:

This one isn't amazing because of the subject, per se, but just the sheer chance of getting
such a perfect photo.

This one because it shows what you can't really see in just watching the divers - how their entire body tenses up -
but this guy's face is weirdly relaxed.

And this one, this one, and this one are just very cool.

This Tim Walker photography set my inner child and lover of books trampling through my imagination. I cannot even begin to explain how much I want to just live in that picture.

A couple of photographs from my area in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.  The first is impressive:  A barge that was floated up onto land in the middle of a highway.  But it's the second one that I think is the most amazing:  These are the storm gates in my county's levee.  The levee is about 14 feet I high think.  My town is on the right, thankfully.

The Olympus bioscapes comp has some incredible imagery.  I really like this one in 4th this year:

It's the brain of a zebrafish larva, where each neuron has been made to express a random mixture of fluorescent proteins.  Awesome stuff.

I really like the photos of Arno Rafael Minkkinen. He takes mostly just nude self-portairts in the nature, and the way he incorporates himself with the nature in the pictures is great.

This picture is pretty puzzling
(NSFW, contains naked butt). Remind you, he doesn't alter the pictures anyway afterwards, so getting a picture exactly like that (about yourself, no less) must be pretty goddamn difficult.

Paper found in Hiroshima after the A-Bomb. Notice how the characters, being black, absorbed more heat and were burned straight off the paper.

Here is a picture taken recently of the Venus/Jupiter convergence.

In this telescopic photo you can see Jupiter's moons (jupiter is the dimmer light) in relation to the photographer's terrestrial landscape.

I always find these "in context" photos amazing.

I found these sets of pictures on the same site but they are of two places that couldn't be more different from one another.

First, some stunning shots from Etosha National Park, Namibia.  Surprisingly lush and colorful photos of a setting that, based on previous impressions, I'd always somehow perceived as stark and severe.

Then, there's Antarctica.  The pics of the aurora australis look like science fiction paintings.  In truth, I had not known of the phenomenon until i saw these photos.  You always seem to hear of the aurora aorealis but never so much its southern cousin.  Also, it's just awe inspiring to see the night sky from a perspective completely devoid of modern light pollution.

Not to be "that guy", but they're holding their shields upside down.

I suppose I should contribute something of value to this thread, so I'll give you this photo of a Nimitz class aircraft carrier. Floating cities aren't far off.
