I've always been impressed by the Horse Head Nebula

The "fireworks" galaxy
pic reminds me of one of the ground textures in Starcraft.

A waterspout

And, of course, the Helix nebula.  That one has creeped me out since I first saw it online last year in an e-mail called the Eye of God.  It really does look like a giant eye in space... but that's why it's so great.

Yeah, everybody try to link your pictures with a description rather than embedding them.

By nature some of these photos will be huge, and that's fine, but let people browse the descriptions and click the ones they want.  Otherwise each page would take 15 minutes to load on dialup (and 40% of the readers are still on dialup).

Which happens to be on top of a huge skyscraper.

This untethered spacewalk was in 1984.

 http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap050322.html

The astronaut Bruce McCandless was flying an MMU, a kind of mini-spacecraft shaped like a comfy chair.

It must have been thrilling/scary in equal parts.

Picture of a meteor shower somewhere.  A friend sent it to me - not sure if it's fake or not.  But it's a great photo.

Australian Parliament House, on the day of the Canberra bushfires

The date on the photographs is wrong, it was actually the 18th of January. I swear, when the sky turned red, I was on the verge of converting back to Christianity. . .

NASA's Deep Impact mission climaxed successfuly today.

As most of you know, the mission is about a probe that has been shot at the comet Tempel 1. I'm something of a space exploration junkie, and I'm thrilled that after the Pathfinder success 1997 another huge mission event took place right on my birthday.

Go, Deep Impact, Go!
