He's president of the European Council - a job that has been slightly modified by the Lisbon treaty, but it's not like it's a totally new position with mad power.
The difference is that the post used to be filled on a rotary system that sucked balls and didn't allow for continuity. Now they elected a guy for a period of 2 1/2 years to do that. He has been elected by the representatives we elected, so there's nothing fishy about it.
I'm all for freedom of the press, but the tabloids are showing once more how well they do fearmongering. Aaaaah, we have a president now, no one asked us! - Bullshit, there were even referendums on the Lisbon treaty. If you feel you haven't been asked, you just didn't care. The scope of this new post is being greatly exaggerated, which is debunked easily by about 2 minutes of googling.
Oh, and as a citizen of the European Union, I want to ask my fellow citizens in Britain: What is wrong with you people? Your country signed the treaties, so you're in. With that commitment you took (and the representation you have been given) the EU for you should have become "we", not "them". Stop treating it like this sinister external force, you're part of it and you have influence, same as anyone else. (Sorry for calling out the Brits, but it does seem like your country is especially prone to go batshit insane about European policy. Quite possibly my perceptions are skewed, but it looks like at least all the subscribers to the Daily Mail and various other news sources could use some educating about what the European Union is/does.)
The scary thing is, if Britain had a referendum on the EU, we'd probably vote to leave it.
I think it'll be good to have a representative for the EU on the world stage. But I think a popular election would have given the EU some of the legitimacy it needs, as well as make people feel less like it was something imposed from outside.
That said, only a few countries actually had referenda on Lisbon. And for those that voted against it, it was just repackaged and sent to the polls again.
