The console will be gone soon. There will certainly be one more offering from Nintendo, possibly one more Xbox, and never another Playstation.

After-wards, they will have to rely on publishing the game franchises contracted to them, gimmicky wireless controllers, and copyright security (have any of you ever actually really purchased a PC game?).

That being said, Nintendo FTW.

I don't get why people keep suggesting this...

You'd basically be turning the console market into a less flexible variation of the PC market.

PC's are generic, and have interchangeable parts.
The downside is anyone making high-performance software (eg. games), has to be able to account for the thousands of variations in hardware and operating software.

A standardised console is a much bigger project than a data storage medium. (notice that both the Wii and 360 use DVD's? - different formatting, sure. But the drive technology is the same, the data capacity is the same too...)

look at mobile phones... Getting any two phones that even work the same way practically doesn't happen.

You want standardised consoles?
Make cheap gaming PC's.

Well, i would say why does the ps3 (aka the motherfucker console of pimos) exists?, Wii can be played by hardcore gamers if they focus on games like no more heroes 2, or super smash brawl (seriosuly, play the story mode on ssb, bet you cant make it on easy without doing a continue on easy) , xbox 360 has halo, and other games like dead rising that calls attentions and are hell good, ps3 has a bonus over all the consoles that its the free internet online gaming yet the wii also has this and it costs less. but well uniting all consoles on one may had pros but may not.

Hell, I want a Wii solely because they're releasing all the old NES games on it. And I don't care what anyone says, Ocarina of Time was weak stuff compared to the awesome difficulty of The Adventures of Link.

Are we all from the same generation? Because I remember that the first NES came out when I was 3. I didn't even own a computer until I was like... or I'd have to say 9 or 10. Granted, it was a laptop and not the monstrosity that you used to see in desktops back then, but it was a big fat brick. With Windows 3.1. I could barely save anything on it, and I recall deleting DOS from it out of spite. So then it really was a brick. (come to think of it, I don't know if we ever fixed it. Man, I was hoping the computer would get sucked into the void with no DOS. The reality was very disappointing.) Computer technology is much more advanced now, to be sure, and a great deal of the reason for that is that they are more useful for a variety of things, not just gaming. Consoles, though, are JUST for gaming. NES was the cornerstone of AWESOMENESS! I used to stay up late with my mom beating such games as Kung-Fu, The Legend of Zelda, and Marble Madness. So while I understand the lure of the PC game, I have to say, consoles rule, and it's because they have been around longer. The age old war between console and PC gamers will probably never be settled, but you, the reader, must realize that anyone's preference usually comes from which platform they grew up on.

Datura's right. There ARE millions upon millions of cashed-up PCers out there. I know because (although being a poor PCer), many of my friends are that very breed. Such assholes. Give it up, Snowy.

Sorry, Snowy, I'm not a 100 percent sure what point you were driving at. But I do take issue with your description of consoles as "popular", as if to say that PC gaming isn't.

Despite what the asymmetrical statistics concerning sales would have you believe, there are millions and millions of cashed-up PC gamers out there. A classic PC game can stand right next to a console bestseller in terms of shipped units. The problem is, most developers don't have the ambition to shoot for "classic". Hell, major publishers actively discourage innovation. And PC gamers, as a rule, have much pride in their chosen platform and it's eminent history. Meaning, it'll take much more than a movie tie-in or a screaming hype machine to convince the PC crowd to part with their hard-earned dope money en masse. It's a matter of principle.

Datura, while I agree with you, there is one thing that consoles have over PCs. While this is a good and bad thing, it is still a reason why consoles are so popular.

When a Playstation 3 (Xbox 360, Wii, etc.) game comes out at launch, two years after, five years after, it still requires the same system and that's it. You don't have to upgrade your graphics card, or worry about compatibility issues. That's initially why I left PC gaming to begin with.

While this is a reason console gaming is popular, it also holds them back when new technology comes out that can be programmed into a up to date PC, but a three year old console doesn't have that kind of power. It's why the PS3 has a massive amount of hardware power that it doesn't seem to use. They are trying to make up the difference by patching a system when an update is available and have the power to run it.

Now, before you think I'm arguing against you, let me say this: Half-Life 2 (The Orange Box) is incredibly popular on consoles, however look at the release dates. When did it come out for PC as opposed to Xbox 360?

Consoles still port a large amount of games over from PC, however I think getting an MMO or a decent RTS is still out of reach since a keyboard/mouse set up allows the user to essentially design the controller around their style of play, where a console player has to go with what's available or offered.

Fuck, I'm not being argumentative enough to post this on the internet...

I'd rather have a baby raped with a broken bottle then have them nerve gassed by Obama and his Health Care Re-fuhrer... Sorry, I meant "Reform"

Okay, I think that allows me to post now...

-Snowy

P.S. Shit! I think I accidentally spelled everything right! Fuck, I'll learn how to post properly one of these days, I swear!

Oh, and as for numbers -- console devs cream their pants when they crack a few million in sold units.

Meanwhile there are ONE AND A HALF BILLION privately owned personal computers worldwide.
