There already is one unified console: a PC. A game system with half the computing power of your old desktop can run games better than a new top of the line computer is because there is only one set of hardware that the program has to be written for. Back in the day, my dad used to have an employee who had worked for Sony on the Playstation hardware. The reason that the PS2 could play PS1 games is because the PS2's graphics card used the processor and a lot of hardware from the PS1. When the PS2 played PS1 games, it just switched off its processor and ran the whole thing from the graphics card. In the same way, the first generaton PS3 had the PS2's chipset. The new ones don't and thats where the backwards compatibility issues come in.

When a program can be optimized for a specific set of hardware, it can be made to run much faster because it doesn't have to deal with inconsistencies.

I love my Dreamcast. SoulCalibur, and Crazy Taxi have been my fast friends for ages. Hell, even Space Channel 5 is good for a laugh and a good cartoon-inspired masturbation session.

Hmm, so many people with different perspectives on this subject...

"HAVING A BONER ROCKS!!!"
-Havelock Ellis (1859 - 1939)

That should clear things up.

Four:- Manufacturers don't want to be competing with cheaper versions of the same product - they want a distinct selling point that makes you buy their product instead of their competitors. Five:- In the wii's case, it's targetting a very different market.
