When LOLcats Attack!

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Everybody loves LOLcats—you know, those witty combinations of humorous pictures and broken cat-English captions that have been taking the internet by storm ever since their invention in the mid-to-late Zero-ies—but as with any art form, the longer they exist, the more controversial they need to be to continue to attract attention.

Here are just a few examples which suggest that, in an effort to stay relevant and “edgy,” the phenomenon of LOLism may have crossed the line:

Republican Sketch Artist At Large

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

There’s nothing funny about the December 13, 2007 murder of two LSU graduate students. It was a heinous and needless crime. And heavens knows this blogger has never mined tragedy for a cheap joke.

So as a public service, I’m reprinting the sketch of one of the suspects:

Attention, all Cracked readers, if you see former Democratic Congressman and current Chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council, Harold Ford, Jr., please alert authorities immediately.

Gladstone writes for Cracked and others. Go to Wayne Gladstone Lives in Maine to see all his published stuff, links to his other worthless endeavors, and his full name and state of residence.

How Far Is Too Far?

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

It’s been an interesting week here at the Cracked blog; my fellow writer Gladstone took some hits after posting a joke about the resemblance of a police sketch of a murder victim to the mascot of a certain humor magazine (which coincidentally was the inspiration for a knock-off franchise which would, years later, give birth to this very site).

Criticism was somewhat intense; phrases such as “maggot snot,” “pathetic excuse for comedic writing,” and “I’ll make you paint a sketch in your own blood” were thrown around. Which is fine—I believe it was Ben Franklin who said that the tree of great comedy websites must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of tasteless bloggers and commenters with poor spelling. Or words to that effect.

I felt somewhat guilty, however, since I believe I’ve done much worse in the past. You see, before we came to the happy pastures of Cracked, Mr. Gladstone and I used to ply our trade for a (sadly departed) site where the police sketch/Alfred E. Neuman joke would have rated fairly low on the offensiveness scale. To share just a few examples of the depths of comic depravity I was willing to plumb in those crazy days of my squandered youth, I’ll have you know that I…

… and last but not least:

However, lest you believe that the space where my heart should be contains only an icy, desperate void, I’ll have you know that I am not completely without compassion. For example, I waited for three entire hours after Anna Nicole Smith’s tragic demise to create this graphic:

What Me Found In A Storage Bin?

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Apparently, Galveston Bay authorities have arrested a couple for the murder of “Baby Grace” — the toddler whose body washed ashore in a storage bin last month. Based on the child’s composite sketch, I’m guessing the break in the case came when police began investigating individuals with motives for killing Alfred E. Neuman.

And this just in: The composite artist has also released his sketch of the couple arrested by the Galveston Bay authorities.
