Being a big Apatow fan for a while now... I read this article and lol'd.... I find most of his movies very funny, and actually think he does a good job of balancing between exaggerated, yet realistic comedies (40 YOV, FSM, Superbad, Knocked Up) with movies that conceptually are absolutely ridiculous (Anchorman, Drillbit, Dewey Cox, Talladega Nights) yet still entertain. I think he has his niche, and definitely follows a bit of a formula (cast especially) but I think many people overlook the differences in some of the humor, and situational comedy... I think the jokes, albeit sometimes crude, and predictable, provide a good look into the everyday life of the protagonist, and by contrast make the eventual transformation more noticeable, i.e Rogen in Knocked Up finally owning up to his responsibilities as a potential father/husband, and finally acting as an adult, regardless of the path his friends continue to lead.
