He used the reference because harry is the male lead, not because of some fictional stereotype you seem to think gays are affected with. Also, It's not disturbing because he is gay. It's disturbing because giving sexual (gay or hetero) connotations to this type of character is just not done (something he made reference to, very clearly might I add), and attempting to do so is such an awkward device the author may as well have had Dumbledore change into a fucking dinosaur mid-book. My reaction to either one was and would have been equally and unequivocally "WTF". It's like realizing god is a tentacle monster halfway through the bible. Most kids (unless their parents are a-holes who began the indoctrination process early) don't really know anything about homosexuality. So when they do learn about it, they'll already have an example of a homosexual person to associate the new information with. When some non-Harry-Potter-reading bully calls the outcast a "faggot", Harry Potter kids are going to know that anyone can be gay - even their esteemed Dumbledore. They'll have a foundation to build lives of unity and tolerance. J.K. Rowling's books deserve even more credit than they're given... and not just for the magic.
