The 13 Most Ridiculous TV Shows to Ever Get Green-Lit

article image

#4. BJ and the Bear--NBC (1979-1981)

This show was about a trucker called BJ who traveled around the South in his big rig with his pet chimp, "The Bear." Together, they had all sorts of adventures roaming the highways and running into trouble with the law. But by the end of every episode they always managed to find time for a laugh, a lesson learned and a sexual misadventure with a drifter.

We may have made up that drifter bit. The chimp thing is true though.

#3. The Man from Atlantis--NBC (1977-1978)

Patrick Duffy has webbed toes and gills, and together with a beautiful doctor and a team of government agents, he roams the seas fighting undersea crime. (Okay, technically it was the character played by Patrick Duffy who had webbed toes, but we wanted to see if we could mess up some search engines this way.)

When he wasn't foiling evil aquatic-based schemes, Patrick Duffy also managed to travel back in time to the Wild West and Medieval Italy. The Medieval Italy episode was particularly remarkable, due to the fact that he managed to meet famous Italians Romeo and Juliet, who didn't seem the least bit surprised to find out they were non-fictional characters.

Also, in another episode the polar ice caps melted, but in Man from Atlantis canon it turns out that this isn't that big a deal, and is in fact easily fixed within an hour of plot (including commercial breaks) if you have webbed toes.

#2. Quark--NBC (1977-1978)

Quark was about the wacky crew of an interstellar garbage truck. The ensemble consisted of the dour captain, two sexy twins, a hermaphrodite, a plant creature-who, thriftily, looks exactly like a human-and the saddest-looking robot you've ever seen. Throughout the show's short run, the crew traveled the interstellar garbage lanes getting into mishaps, and, we're guessing, probably solving some manner of space-crime as well. Astoundingly enough, this preposterous show was nominated for an Emmy. What could it possibly have been nominated for, you ask?

That's right. Costume design.

#1. The 100 Lives of Black Jack Savage--NBC (1991)

In order to escape a lifetime of eternal torment, 17th century pirate Black Jack Savage must save one life for every one he's taken. Left to haunt a Caribbean fortress until the present day, he teams up with a Wall Street con artist on the run from his own demons. Together they must use their wits, guile, and a high tech speedboat to save 100 lives-and in the process, both of their souls. (Think My Name is Earl, but with pirates and no writing staff.) Sadly, they came up a little short of the 100 necessary lives when the show was cancelled for being stupid.

Little-known fact: series co-star Roma Downey would later take this idea, remove the pirates and re-pitch it to CBS as Touched by an Angel. Longtime fans of TBAA will recall the pilot episode featuring a high-tech speedboat chase and a cache of hidden gold.

Y'know .. I might understand "Fall Guy" but why didn't "TJ Hooker" make the list?? I mean really .. Capt. Kirk as a cop??

My god... So many shows I used to love... Beauty and the Beast, Bosom Buddies, The Fall Guy, Out of This World, and of course, TGAH!!

That, and the fact that for some reason I want to see The 100 Lives of Black Jack Savage, shows me that... I have no taste at all.

Oh yeah, before I forget.... Shasta McNasty, which was basically bathroom humor taken to levels so low, Barbados Slim of Futurama fame couldnt limbo under it.

Speaking of Futurama, a show that I love.... it aired on Fox, which is responsible for a whole slew of horrible sit-com attempts.
Life on a Stick
That 80's Show (Lasted 4 episodes)
Married By America
Who Wants To Marry A Millionaire
Happy Hour
My Bare Lady (Fox Reality)

As Marge Simpson once said.... "You know, Fox turned into a hard-core sex channel so gradually, I didnt even notice"

Also, I misspoke earlier about Nowhere Man. It was the 2nd most popular show on the fledgling UPN network, and was cancelled.... despite receiving better ratings than Voyager on some nights. It was replaced by Homeboys In Outer Space eventually/sadly in their schedule.

Posted on 8/7/2008 7:01:40 PM

Oh Lord, There are SO many....
Lets see.... Homeboys in Outer Space, a show that perpetuated a WHOLE bunch of negative cultural stereotypes and was the choice of UPN to cancel "Nowhere Man"

Cop Rock.... Certainly different, I'll give them that. Still, a COP Musical ???? I was waiting for a soprano GSW to the groin solo.

Lush Life.... it was about two drunk women who lived in LA if I remember correctly. It was canceled 11 minutes into the first episode. Maybe they should've made it a "reality show" on MTV or VH1 with B-Grade celebrities instead of a scripted sit-com. :p

I guess thats enough for now....

Let's not forget about "It's About Time", the proto-caveman series. Two American astronauts end up in Hollywood "caveman times", where people and badly animated dinosaurs co-exist and everyone speaks Hollywood "Tarzan English". Hilarity ensues. At least in someone's mind it did. Once all the hilarity was burned up with that premise, the astronauts returned to the 1960's and brought the cavepersons with them. More hilarity ensu... never mind; it sucked.

I know this is an old article but I LOVED Beauty and the Beast! Ron Perlman looks SO MUCH BETTER as a lion! Maybe it's too much of a chick show for cracked....

A little bit of trivia: Jon-Erik Hexum, who played Mac Harper on Cover Up (and also played Phineas Bogg on Voyagers!, which I can't believe didn't make this list, though to give it it's due, it did have a character named Phineas Bogg) later pulled a "Terry don't-worry-it's-not-loaded Kath" and accidentally shot himself to death.

The Greatest American Hero was actually a really good TV show. For the first two seasons.

in fact, i wrote beauty and the beast on a long weekend back when i was eight years old. i dont know where you got all that 'jean cocteau' stuff from

Posted on 5/14/2008 12:39:53 PM

actually, beauty and the beast was a 17th century fairy tale, later adapted into a film by Jean Cocteau in 1946, then obviously used for that travesty of a TV show, before being made into a cartoon :D

Misfits of Science?! Holy crap...I thought I was the only one that saw that show. I was laid up in the hospital in a steel back brace when that was on. Courteney gave me wood back then (that, and the story of her and her sexual relationship with her first cousin while living in NY when she was modelling)...but I lost said wood just as quickly the day I heard she chose the least talented guy in Hollywood to marry and push around. Way to go Court...dumbass!

RobotShark, the guy who played the plant guy in Quarks DID NOT commit suicide. He feel asleep in his trailer, the heater emitted carbon monoxide, it poisoned him, and he died. He did NOT do the "old car in the garage" trick. I'm sure you saw "carbon monoxide poisoning" as his death on IMDB and jumped to the conclusion that he had committed suicide. Don't do that. Thanks.

What about the absolute worst show of all time? Galactica 1980? Then there was Buck Rogers In The 25th Century.

Aero D

One show I hoped would make the list, yet didn't was "Down to Earth." It's about a 1920's flapper who gets killed in a car wreck, only to get sent back to earth as a would-be angel trying to earn her wings. How she is supposed to do this is by playing a Mr. Belvedere type housekeeper keeping her slightly ignorant family in line.
